Sea Lily Cole in Doctor Who

It means Karen Gillan's reign as the show's most stunning redhead could be over.

Gorgeous Lily, 22, will appear alongside Time Lord Matt Smith and his assistant Amy Pond, played by Karen, in the new BBC1 series later this year.

The episode, set in the 1600s, will see the Tardis landing on top of a pirate ship.

Lily told TV Biz: "It is a great script and a fun character and I am glad to be involved." An insider said: "Lily's a big fan of the show and jumped at the chance to appear. She will play a sea creature in an episode based around a well-known tale. It's a real ocean adventure."

Lily had a minor role in 2007 movie St Trinian's and appeared with Heath Ledger and Johnny Depp in 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

According to veteran stage actor Geoffrey Burton’s online CV he will be playing Nasa Man in an unknown episode, although given the character name we’re assuming that he appears in the American set opening two-parter

Frances Barber’s online CV has been updated with news that she will be appearing as Kovarian in an episode directed by Peter Hoar, presumably the mid-series cliff-hanger episode Demons Run.

Dr who quotes an unearthly child

"Don't you think you're being rather high-handed, young man? You thought you saw a young girl enter the yard, you imagine you heard her voice, you believe she might be in there. Not very substantial, is it?"

"I tolerate this century but I don't enjoy it."

Your arrogance is nearly as great as your ignorance.
