Celebrating the Series: Victory of the Daleks
After two episodes that introduced a new Doctor, new companion and new-look TARDIS, we now had new versions of his oldest enemy...
We first encountered the Daleks in an early episode that was broadcast in 1963. Over the years their appearance has changed, with different shapes, colours and design elements implying a constant evolution. But when these new Daleks appeared, the change was stunning!
Owen told us, 'My favourite moment in Doctor Who in 2010 was when the Doctor met the new generation of Daleks. I was surprised to find out that they where different colours and bigger !!!' Paul was equally surprised. 'New Daleks! Wow! The Doctor's reaction as they glided forward and he met a new wave of Daleks for the first time... brilliant!'
Nathanial was also impressed, saying, 'I love the new Daleks and how colourful they are!'
But there was more to the season's third story than the deadly Daleks. The evocative realisation of Britain in the blitz, the legendary cabinet war room and spitfires in space! Mark Gatiss' script was crammed with audacious and exciting moments, but with some great characters, too, like Winston Churchill and the robotic but ultimately heroic Bracewell.
Sarah picked up on this and wrote, 'The Victory of the Daleks is a great episode because the characters are so good like Winston Churchill and of course the Doctor and Amy.' Zoe got in touch to say, 'I'll give you me view of some of my favourite comedic moments... Victory of the Daleks: The Jammy Dodger TARDIS self destruct button! Who ever thought anyone, even the Doctor, could fool a Dalek! It's also amazing how well Churchill and the Doctor get along. It's obvious that they have had a past together, and I find the old pocket-picking trick as an inside joke that anyone could understand.'
Vicki gave a few of her favourite moments, citing 'Amy and the Doctor convincing Bracewell that he's human... Jammy dodgers! Oh, and the new Daleks, of course! :) '
Many, many of you said how much you enjoyed the jammy dodger ruse and it's easy to understand why. Confronting an array of Daleks with only a jammy dodger keeping you from extermination? Even for the Doctor, that takes the biscuit...

Celebrating the Series: The Beast Below
The Beast Below had a difficult task in following the new Doctor's debut but the adventure proved totally different to The Eleventh Hour. After the everyday setting of Leadworth we were suddenly plunged into the future on Starship UK as Amy and the audience were shown further into the Time Lord's world.
Liz Ten, the Smilers and the heart-breaking story of the Star Whale all spring to mind when recalling the episode and there were plenty of emotional highlights.
Kit told us, 'Towards the end of The Beast Below, when the Doctor shouts "Nobody human has anything to say to me right now" I cried a little bit.' And the comic moments were appreciated, too: 'I love the series... the moment that made me laugh,' Owen said, 'is the Doctor saying "Are you going to stick out your tongues?" to Smilers in The Beast Below.'
Sarah wrote, 'The Beast Below was a great episode. Amy showed the Doctor she is a good companion by saving the last Star Whale,' adding, 'I think it would be really cool to be on Starship UK... it was a really good episode.'
Ashley agreed, enthusing, 'Loved The Beast Below... Matt and Karen are super cute together!'
And people were warming to the new Doctor quickly. Nicholas gave us a wonderful description of the Eleventh Doctor: 'Mad, mad and mad with a cherry on top (which in itself is mad as well). That's how you can describe Matt Smith's Doctor. His hair, his clothes, his look, his intelligence, his personality, everything!'
But for some people it was a first. 'The Beast Below was my very-first Doctor Who episode.' Loes revealed. 'That's where my Doctor Who obsession began...'
And after everything that happened on Starship UK we got an added treat at the end of the story as the following week's adventure was hinted at... Richard said his favourite moment of the episode was when 'Churchill rings the Doctor and the Ironside appears...' We'd soon find out what that would lead to...
The last word today goes to Shane who talked about how he enjoyed the emerging picture of the Eleventh Doctor. 'As a long-time Doctor Who fan I thought Matt Smith hit the nail on the head with his excellent portrayal of the wandering Time Lord. My favourite Doctor yet!'

Doctor Who 20 things from the series 5 boxset
1. There will be a speech in the Christmas special about the Doctor not having a hat.2. Matt Smith calls Karen Gillen “Plumpy sparrow” because she likes to eat but doesn’t put on weight.
3. The “Jeff co-ordinates the experts via his laptop” scene in “The Eleventh Hour” was originally going to take place in a classroom full of kids (without the porn references)…
4. Also in “The Eleventh Hour”, during the video conference, the guy above Patrick Moore is the director’s brother.
5. The cave corridors in the Silurian two-parter were redressed corridors from the Byzantium in the Weeping Angels two-parter (that’s why they’re both circular).
6. Karen calls her chin her “plural” because she thinks she has a double chin.
7. The Tennant-era TARDIS makes an unscheduled cameo appearance in “The Time Of Angels” – they used the wrong CGI version in the scene where River flies through space.
8. Matt Smith eats egg and cress sandwiches on set nearly every day.
9. In “The Time Of Angels” Matt Smith really did bite Karen’s hand. Her scream was for real.
10. The gondolas in “The Vampires Of Venice” were filmed in Caerphilly Castle moat and CGIed in later.
11. The Pandorica Chamber was the biggest set ever built for Doctor Who to date.
12. Matt bought a copy of football mag Match as a Secret Santa present.
13. Karen bought Matt a Katherine Jenkins calendar.
14. The line about the “final resting place of the Headless Monks” in “The Time Of Angels” was texted by Moffat to the crew when producer Piers Wenger felt that the ecclesiastical location needed some explanation.
15. Amy learnt about all the Doctor’s previous companions in-between “Flesh And Stone” and “The Vampires Of Venice”.
16. Mark Gatiss’s favourite colour is orange.
17. The Silurian voiceover during “Cold Blood” was a post-filming addition, scripted by Steven Moffat.
18. Mark Gatiss has been trying to sneak the phrase “arrows of the half-light” into a script for years (he failed again with “Victory Of The Daleks” – it was cut).
19. Alex Kingston was worried she would look like mutton dressed as lamb as Cleoptra.
20. Originally the book the Doctor finds in “The Time Of Angels” was going to have been written by one of the warrior clerics whom the Angels had sent back in time.
