The Daleks are to be given "a rest" from Doctor Who, writer Steven Moffat has told the Radio Times.

Moffat, said: "They aren't going to make an appearance for a while. We thought it was about time to give them a rest."

Moffat said they had been defeated by the Doctor "about 400 times".

Created by Terry Nation, the Daleks are the Doctor's hugely popular enemies who have made regular appearances in the long-running science fiction show since first appearing in 1963.

Moffat said: "There's a problem with the Daleks. They are the most famous of the Doctor's adversaries and the most frequent, which means they are the most reliably defeatable enemies in the universe."

Terry Nation The Man Who Invented The Daleks

Terry Nation was one of the most successful and prolific writers for television that Britain ever produced. Survivors, his vision of a post-apocalyptic England, so haunted audiences in the Seventies that the BBC revived it over thirty years on. Blake’s 7, constantly rumoured for return, endures as a cult sci-fi classic. And his most fearsome creations, the Daleks, ensured and at times eclipsed the success of Doctor Who. Indeed, almost half a century after their first appearance, new additions to Dalek mythology continue to top the Saturday-night ratings, while the word itself has entered the Oxford English Dictionary, passing into the language as the name of the most famous race of aliens in fiction. But while his genocidal pepper pots brought him notoriety and riches, Nation played a much wider role in British broadcasting’s golden age. As part of the legendary Associated London Scripts, he wrote for Spike Milligan, Frankie Howerd and an increasingly troubled Tony Hancock. And as one of the key figures behind the adventure series of the Sixties – including The Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders! – he turned the pulp classics of his boyhood into a major British export. Like Arthur Conan Doyle before him, Nation was frequently bemused by the appeal of his most famous creations, and similarly cavalier toward them. Now, The Man Who Invented the Daleks explores their curious and contested origins, and sheds light on a strange world of ambitious young writers, producers and performers without whom British culture today would look very different.

Academic uncovers Dalek fear factor

An academic claims to have solved one of television's most enduring questions - just why are the Daleks so scary?

Dr Robin Bunce said the fear inspired by the creatures, who have sent generations of children scurrying behind sofas, is nothing to do with their robotic cries of "exterminate" or their relentless attempts to conquer the world, but because we are worried we might become like them.

The Cambridge University academic said: "The reason the Daleks are evil is because we recognise that they were once better. They are the nightmare future we dread."

It's the final day of our week-long celebration of the Daleks and we finish with another clip you told us ranked as one of your favourites. It's the dramatic moment River Song confronted the stone Dalek in The Big Bang. Now, that's the kind of thing you want to see when you visit a museum!

Today we slip back to 1966 to watch a trailer for the adventure, The Power of the Daleks. Although the story introduced the new Doctor, the trailer is much more concerned about the return of his old enemies!

We've also go another 'what happened next' moment, this time from episode two of Revelation of the Daleks. In today's sequence two assassins seem to hone in on Davros... shots are fired and it looks like the end for the scientist who created the Daleks... but 'what happens next?' We'll be bringing you the full clip tomorrow so you can see if you were right!

Dr who Daleks: Day One

It's day one of our Dalek celebration and the first person to arrive at the party is Davros, the misguided mad man who created the Daleks on his home planet of Skaro.

The clip comes from the 1975 story, Genesis of the Daleks, and in this adventure we learnt about the origins of the Doctor's oldest enemies. It turns out they were created by a talented but twisted scientist, Davros, who saw the creatures as the only way his race, the Kaleds, could survive after a damaging, almost endless war with the Thals. The big flaw in his plan was making the Daleks deadly and brilliant... but without compassion or mercy.

In this sequence we join Sarah Jane Smith and meet Davros for the first time. Sarah finds him testing the weaponry of his fledgling creations and as he realises they can blast away with power and accuracy, he delivers that chilling and ominous line: 'The weaponry is perfect... Now we can begin!'

Dalek sick of fans asking him to say ‘exterminate’

The star of the Doctor Who series, Dalek No. 3, says his career has suffered due to his continued typecasting as an extraterrestrial robot. The gripes are aired in his new autobiography Yes, I Can Climb Stairs, which was launched by Tom Baker on Thursday night.

The creature from the planet Skaro says he’s received few offers other than from the producers of the long-running BBC drama. “People think that when you are a Dalek you can only play a dalekanium-covered mutant from outer space, but at RADA, I was acclaimed for my King Lear.”

In his book, Dalek No. 3 reveals that he was once in talks with George Lucas to star as a predecessor of R2D2 in the recent Star Wars prequels, but that Lucas became too concerned that viewers wouldn’t accept him as being from a different alien universe.

Speaking at the launch, the tank-enclosed performer refused to utter his trademark computerized catchphrase, “Exterminate!”, claiming that the very idea of the word now made him sick. “I can’t go to the shops without somebody coming up to me and saying that word,” he sighed robotically. “Sometimes they even follow me up and down the aisles, repeating it and laughing.”

Northern Charity Daleks raising cash for kids

DOCTOR Who fans Rob Bosher and Keith Lawler are hoping to exterminate the competition with their handbuilt Daleks.

The pair slaved away for two years to recreate the full-sized monster from the hit TV series.

Now, the pals are travelling around the region with the Time Lord to raise money for local charities.

Since setting up Northern Charity Daleks at the beginning of this year they have managed to pull in £5,000 for children’s charities nationwide.

And in September the charity managed to raise more than £500 for the Woodhorn Museum and Archives Centre, near Ashington, Northumberland.

Rob, of Birtley, Gateshead, said: “I’ve been a Doctor Who fan since I was a little boy. I have always wanted to build a full-sized Dalek, and then I came across a plan for making one on the internet.
