Minister of Chance

A new audio drama featuring the vocal talents of two former Doctors has just been released.

The Minister of Chance is described as a new form of entertainment, a radiophonic drama, made using a combination of film and radio techniques and delivered by podcast.

The series, which has won rave reviews from industry insiders, boasts an impressive cast with the Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy playing The Witch Prime and the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann playing Durian.

Julian Wadham of The English Patient and The Madness of King George, plays The Minister, Jenny Agutter plays Professor Cantha and Paul Darrow plays Lord Rathen. The cast also features Gethin Anthony, Lauren Crace, Stuart Fox, Peter Guinness, Lloyd Hutchinson, Mark Lewis and Jay Taylor.

The character of the Minister of Chance first appeared in Death Comes to Time, a BBC Doctor Who webcast first broadcast on the BBCi Cult website in the summer of 2001, where the character was played by Stephen Fry.

John Barrowman has made a number of appearances on television recently, promoting the release on DVD of "John Barrowman Live At The Royal Albert Hall", and the new 3-CD release of his music, "The Collection"; this included a half-hour stint singing songs from the collection live on shopping channel QVC in November. He will shortly be appearing in Aladdin at the Glasgow SECC.

Barrowman has also become newsworthy in the India media, in association with photos of him apparently kissing Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan backstage during Friday Night with Jonathan Ross back in February!

Carey Mulligan (Sally Sparrow, Blink is playing socialite Daisy Buchanan in the film version of The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann. (Though not confirmed, she is believed to be starring with Leonardo Di Caprio as millionaire Joe Gatsby and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway.)

Mulligan picked up the Best Performance trophy at the Women in Film and TV Awards on Friday (3rd); the event also saw a lifetime achievement award for actress Sheila Hancock (who played Helen A in The Happiness Patrol).

Former Doctor David Tennant joined a number of celebrities (including current James Bond actor Daniel Craig and singer Geri Halliwell) who took to the ICAP trading floor in order to raise money for Prince Charles's charities, Youth Business International and Prince's Teaching Institute.

Having announced having a role in the forthcoming The Hobbit film back in October, the official press conference for the film formally confirms Sylvester McCoy as playing wizard Radagast the Brown; other names in the film include Martin Freeman (who plays Watson in Steven Moffat's other popular show Sherlock), Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, and the return of Cate Blanchett (who played Elven Queen Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings trilogy).

Christopher Eccleston attended a special charity screening of what he has called his most important work, Hillsborough, after which he gave a 30 minute discussion about the film with attendees; the actor had nominated the drama to be shown as part of fund-raising for the Clapperboard Youth Project. Sylvester McCoy keen on Doctor Who return

Actor Sylvester McCoy has said he would be keen to return to Doctor Who for its 50th anniversary.

McCoy, who played the seventh Doctor from 1987 to 1989, said fans wanted a multi-Doctor story to mark the programme's golden jubilee in 2013.

He also suggested that earlier Doctors - played by actors who have since died - could be brought back using computer technology.

"They've got such imaginations, they could do anything," he said.

"Would I do it? Yes, I'd be delighted to," said the actor when asked if he would consider reprising his most famous role.

"I am a part of it, it hasn't ever gone away and I celebrate the 21st Century Doctors," he continued - a reference to his successors Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith.

Time Lord technology

The first Doctor Who show to feature more than one actor playing the titular Time Lord was The Three Doctors in 1972.

That saw William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee - the first three actors to play the Doctor on television - appearing on screen together.

"I know that the producers balk at it. All those egos in the same room would be very difficult to deal with," McCoy continued.

"But the fans are hoping that for the 50th anniversary, which is coming up, they might do something like that.

"It would be fascinating with all the technology if they could bring back Jon Pertwee and William Hartnell.

"That would be amazing - and I bet they could do it if they wanted to."

The 67-year-old Scot also joked that technology could be used to "make us thin again".

McCoy is currently appearing in London in the first stage adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's comic novel Decline and Fall.

Paradise Towers coming to DVD

The Seventh Doctor story, Paradise Towers is due for DVD release in 2011 according to a blog by the story's writer Stephen Wyatt.

First shown between 5th October and 26th October 1987 the four part story stars Sylvester McCoy as The Doctor with Bonnie Langford as Melanie along with guest stars Richard Briers as the Chief Caretaker, Elizabeth Spriggs as Tabby, Judy Cornwell as Maddy and Howard Cooke as Pex.

The story was the second story of Season Twenty Four and was directed by Nicholas Mallett.

Dr who 47 years today

47 Years ago today Dr who was born on the 23rd of November 1963 the first ever episode (unearthly child) was shown on BBC 1 at 17:15.

In the first episode saw 2 school teachers Ian Chesterton. and Barbara Wright travel with the doctor and his granddaughter Susan. It ran for 4 episodes and was 25 minutes long

Dr who ran for 26 series 1963 - 1989 and in 1996 their was a Dr who film staring Paul McGann But Dr who returned in 2005 

Their have been eleven doctors so far and they have been played by William Hartnell,Patrick Troughton,john Pertwee,tom baker,peter Davidson,Colin baker,Sylvester McCoy,Paul McGann,Christopher Eccelston,David Tennant and Matt smith

The 100 Greatest Sci-Fi & Fantasy TV Shows

Science fiction has been a regular fixture on television since the early days of the medium itself. In the US, kid-orientated space shows like Captain Video and his Video Rangers (1949-1955) and Space Patrol (1950) swiftly amassed a cult following, while Britain was treated to the altogether more grown-up The Quatermass Experiment in 1953.

By the 1960s, science fiction was big business. The shows varied both in tone and content, from The Twilight Zone to Star Trek and from Doctor Who to The Prisoner, but all dealt with our fascination with what lies beyond the limits of known human existence. It’s a trend that continues today, with genre television now an integral part of the schedules…

1) Doctor Who (1963-present)


It had to be, didn’t it? No other sci-fi show combines the breadth of storytelling with such consistency of tone and character. Like the best anthology shows it can take you to any time and any place from week to week, yet like the best continuing dramas it has at its heart a dependable, recognisable hero. The Doctor’s face may change but his archetypal qualities of bravery, decency and fair play remain. For nearly 50 years, we have seen his universe through the eyes of his everyday travelling companions, encountering alien races so enduring that the modern show does not shy away from them, but celebrates them anew. Silurians, Sontarans and Cybermen threaten and thrill children now as much as they did in the 1970s, while the Daleks and the TARDIS are such a part of our cultural landscape that they can be found in dictionaries around the world. The format is so flexible, yet always so distinctly Doctor Who, that it is sure to run for another 50 years.

Interview with Sylvester McCoy, Time and the Rani DVD review

It certainly has been a busy week here at DWP Towers, quizzes and commentary tracks keeping the 50th episode celebration week ticking nicely along.

We have saved the best for last though - episode 50 is now yours to enjoy, and there is a lot to enjoy in this little file!

First up is an interview with the Seventh Doctor and soon to be Lord of the Rings Wizard, Sylvester McCoy.

Tom was lucky enough to have a bit of a chat with McCoy in his recent trip to the Big Finish studios. We think you will find this interview unlike any other you have heard from him.

Back in the studio, the boys review the Seventh Doctor's first adventure, now unleashed on DVD - Time and the Rani. This much maligned story has been given the 2Entertain deluxe DVD treatment and we look at the release and the story itself.

Sylvester McCoy wins role in The Hobbit

Sylvester McCoy has told fans he has been cast as Radagast the Brown in the upcoming film The Hobbit.

Rumours of the Seventh Doctor's involvement in the Peter Jackson film have been around for a while but this is the first conformation from the actor that he has been offered a role in the movie.

McCoy was speaking at the Armageddon Expo in Auckland yesterday, It is understood that McCoy had meetings in Wellington with Jackson and co-producer and co-writer Philippa Boyens last week, where he was offered the role, but that no contracts have yet been signed.
