Tesla Coils Perform Doctor Who Theme!

February 21, 2009

Christian Cawley

This is totally - like way - cool, dude.  Performed by the aptly-named ArcAttack! group, the film clip below shows some Tesla Coils taking part in a rendition in their own unique manner of the Doctor Who theme tune.

An underappreciated quality of the lighting generating coils is their adeptness in making music. It so happens that bolts fired by the coils create "crisply distorted" square waves that don't sound too different from synthesizers.

ArcAttack! was founded to utilise this quality in a performance environment, coupling a DJ system with the Tesla coils.

Genius!

Fake Toys on the Market

When will people learn…….

It seems to be the week for Doctor Who fakes - a Sutton woman has been sentenced for selling counterfeit toys of poor and dangerous quality in the run up to Christmas 2007.

Essex girl Kelly Magnus, 31, this week pleaded guilty consumer safety and trading standards offences after taking a short-term lease in the St Nicholas Centre in Sutton in November 2007.

A representative of BBC Worldwide confirmed to the court that the Doctor Who toys on sale were counterfeit, unlicensed manufactures.

Deputy Leader of Sutton Council Councillor Colin Hall said: “We urge customers to beware cheap goods, especially children’s toys, on sale in shops that set up for short periods of time and then move on.

“What looks like a bargain in the shop could have lethal consequences for a child.”

Anyone desperate for low-priced Doctor Who toys and merchandise should keep a careful eye on "bargain watch" sites such as MoneySavingExpert.com or shop around, avoiding shonky market traders and characters such as Ms Magnus.

There's also no reason to imagine that just because one counterfeit seller was sentenced that there are no more counterfeits.  It would be very to hear of an accident or worse that was cause by a sub-standard item of counterfeit Doctor Who merchandise.

Ideally, we would urge you to stick to high street or retail park stockists - or for the most hassle free shopping, use Forbidden Planet's online store.

David Tennant Talks Matt Smith

Speaking to What's On TV magazine, David Tennant recently revealed how he feels about the casting of Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor. He explained that he feels that Matt has the right idea about the character of The Doctor and last exchanged opinions with him over the phone. David also told the magazine why he feels it's best to not give too much advice to his successor and a quote of David's can be viewed below;
"We chatted on the phone not long ago and we did exchange a few opinions on what’s about to unfold for him, but advice is a very dangerous thing. Matt’s got an extraordinary journey coming up in all sorts of ways and I’m sure he’ll find his own way through it. I could tell Matt was very up for it, though, and excited in all the right ways. He says he’s going to take it seriously and he seems to have the right idea about playing The Doctor, so far as I can tell."
David Tennant will return to our screens as The Doctor in Planet of the Dead which is scheduled to air sometime around Easter. Michelle Ryan, Noma Dumezweni and Lee Evans will also star in the episode which will be written by both Russell T Davies and Gareth Roberts. The episode will be available in high definition when it broadcasts and the Doctor Who team have recently returned from Dubai where they were filming important scenes for the episode.
