Davies confirms new 'Torchwood' details

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies has revealed more details about the upcoming fourth series, subtitled The New World.

The writer told Collider that previous mini-series Children of Earth was being used as "the template of the new Torchwood."

"Children of Earth left things almost format-less," he said. "They had no base, no authority and no mission... except to survive. They're very much underground [now] and trying to survive. They've taken extreme actions. They have friends, they have enemies and they have betrayals."

He continued: "We've got one script and very concrete storylines, so we know there are new regulars, new occasional guest stars and relatives of those characters."

Davies also confirmed that The New World would take place two years after the events of the previous series.

"Torchwood will have been off-air for two years, so I think it will feel like two years have passed," he explained. "The script isn't that specific about it, but I think that two-year gap feels right."

He added that plans to shoot on location in Los Angeles were "yet to be confirmed".

"Any place can double up as a number of places," he suggested. "There will be scenes set in Washington, certainly, but we won't go to Washington to shoot."

Elisabeth Sladen on working with Matt Smith in The Sarah Jane Adventures

ARE YOU SURPRISED BY THE SUCCESS OF THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES?
I was early on, but not now, when you can see what we can do and the format, how it works... It's a quality programme, not a cheap one. It's expensive by children's standards.

JULIAN BLEACH WAS VERY FRIGHTENING DURING THE FIRST TWO-PARTER.
I know - he was very scary during filming too!

YOU'VE WORKED WITH HIM BEFORE - DIDN'T HE PLAY DAVROS IN DOCTOR WHO?
He did indeed. Our director, Joss Agnew, did a fantastic job this year. We were doing one scene and he said, 'Lis, can you do it a different way, just in case we need it?' Because although all ages watch the programme, you have to be aware of the audience you're actually making it for. So we were being careful because it was a scary one.

THE BIG SURPRISE WAS THAT LUKE AND K-9 LEFT AT THE END OF THE FIRST STORY
It makes a very good story and it's right that they move on. Also it's kind of like what the children watching will do, what they might be planning. Tommy (Knight, who plays Luke) found it difficult last year because of the filming schedule and his exams, and we didn't want that again. So this year, when Luke goes off to university, Tommy's actually doing his exams.

WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR OWN K-9 IN REAL LIFE?
Not really! The thing is, he could be very useful, but he's quite a large, immobile object and I just don't have room for him!

THE BIG STORYLINE THIS YEAR INVOLVED THE DOCTOR AND KATY MANNING'S RETURN AS JO GRANT, ANOTHER FORMER TARDIS TRAVELLER
I know! It was great fun. I knew Katy socially, but I'd never worked with her before. And there's no mistaking Jo. In her own sweet way she's just as bonkers as she's always been!

MATT SMITH SAYS HE HAD A GREAT TIME FILMING THE SHOW
Oh bless his cotton socks! I think he's gorgeous, and we absolutely adored having him there, as you can imagine. It was nice for him to just enjoy it, without the stress of carrying the whole show.

DO YOU GET PESTERED IN THE STREET BY FANS?
No. I get recognised, but I never get bothered. They're lovely, young or old. I have to say it generates nice fans, who are always very polite and pleasant. They make me laugh as well.

DO YOU SEE ANY OF YOUR OLD DOCTOR WHO FRIENDS?
Now and again. I saw Tom (Baker) in February this year, I spoke to Nick (Nicholas Courtney, who played the Brigadier) on the phone. But of course dear Jon (Pertwee) is no longer with us. I spoke to Terrance Dicks recently, who was our script editor. And I used to keep in touch with Barry Letts, our producer, but sadly he's no longer with us either. Terry and Barry were responsible for Sarah Jane and, in a way, for me as well.

IS THERE ANYBODY YOU'D LIKE TO HAVE GUEST STAR IN THE SHOW?
Oh loads of people! I did at one point want Meat Loaf, but I don't think the budget would stretch. I do think he's gorgeous though! I love the TV show Monk too. Tony Shalhoub is brilliant, but I'd prefer it if Stottlemeyer, played by Ted Levine, turned up as a detective in Sarah Jane.

HOW DO YOU KEEP IN SUCH GOOD SHAPE?
Drugs of course! No, not really - running up and down those attic steps. And chasing after a bunch of teenagers on set. There's never a dull moment!

HAVE YOU GOT ANY MORE PROJECTS PLANNED?
Oh God no! I'm still working on Sarah Jane. And I'm co-writing my autobiography. I was supposed to be going on holiday, but I haven't been able to go yet. But I'm looking forward to Christmas, it's my favourite time of year.

Billy Connolly: How I was almost Doctor Who

The Scots comedian has confirmed rumours that he was considered by producers to play the Time Lord in a 1996 television movie, a role that eventually went to Paul McGann.

The Big Yin said he was a huge fan of the show and would have loved to portray the time-travelling Doctor. He said in an interview: "It was brought up in a meeting, apparently, but nobody told me until after they decided against it. If I had done it, he would have been angrier, a much angrier Doctor Who. I would have loved it. I'd have taken it."

The world's top Doctor Who historian, Alex Westthorp, revealed earlier this year that the BBC had Connolly on its shortlist. He said: "Billy was seriously considered for the eighth Doctor. Everyone was talking about him as a serious actor.

"I think he would have brought his own sense of comedy to the character, and would have made an incredibly special Doctor. Connolly could easily have made that role his own and taken it to another level."

The Scottish comedian has forged a reputation as a serious straight actor, in particular for playing ghillie John Brown opposite Dame Judi Dench in the film Mrs Brown.

The Doctor role has been held by fellow Scots Sylvester McCoy and David Tennant. Fulton Mackay almost became the fourth Doctor a year before he made his name as prison officer Mr Mackay in Porridge.

Connolly, who is on tour in Canada, also said he was not bothered about recently being dumped as the face of Australian bank ING for a talking orangutan.

He said: "It's hard to get your heart and soul into pensions. But it's good to do it, and it's good to do it well because it's acting. And when you're acting, you have to say things you disapprove of, but you take pride in doing it well.

"I think comics make rulebooks for themselves that they don't really need.

"If you start saying, 'I'm a rebel', are you going to turn down a movie where you play a nice guy?

Executive Producer’s Russell T. Davies & Julie Gardner Exclusive Interview TORCHWOOD: THE NEW WORLD

In 2003, highly-regarded UK television writer Russell T. Davies and his producing partner Julie Gardner reinvented Doctor Who for a new audience. This regeneration of the sci-fi series led to huge ratings success and the creation of two new series, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, which is now in development for its fourth season, and its first on the pay cable channel Starz.

In this exclusive interview with Collider, executive producer/creator/show runner Russell T. Davies and executive producer Julie Gardner talked about their new partnership with Starz, giving the much-beloved series a more global feel, and how science fiction is the perfect means with which to examine the human race. They also hinted at some story ideas and new characters for Season 4, discussed the strength of their new writing staff and revealed that they hope to take the show to the San Diego Comic-Con for 2011. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

The events of Season 3’s five-part mini-series Torchwood: Children of Earth, where the team faced their fiercest threat to date, resulted in the survival of only two of its members – former Police Officer Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), who has since disappeared with her husband and child, and the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), whose history spans across the centuries. When Season 4 returns in the Summer of 2011, it will have a bigger, more international feel, as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson is investigating a global conspiracy that will challenge the entire human race. When he discovers that the answers seem to lie within the secret Torchwood institute, he comes under attack in both the U.S. and U.K. and realizes that there are forces at work within every level of society that are determined to stop Torchwood’s return.

Dr who tenth doctor quotes the runaway bride

Donna: Who was it? Who's paying you? Was it Nerys? Oh my God, she's finally got me back! This has got Nerys written all over it!
The Doctor: Who the hell is Nerys?
Donna: Your best friend!
The Doctor: Hold on, what are you dressed like that for?
Donna:I'm going tenpin bowling. Why do you think, Dumbo?! I was halfway up the aisle! I've waited my whole life for this, it's seconds away, and then you, I don't know, drugged me or something!
The Doctor:I haven't done anything!
The Doctor: You're in space. Outer space. And this is my space ship. It's called the TARDIS.
Donna: How am I breathing?
The Doctor: The TARDIS is protecting us.
Donna: Who are you?
The Doctor: I'm the Doctor. You?
Donna: Donna.
The Doctor: Human?
Donna: Yeah. What, is that optional?
The Doctor: Well, it is with me.
Donna:You're an alien?
The Doctor: Yeah.
Donna: It's freezing with these doors open.
The Doctor: How could this happen... there is no way a human being could just possibly lock itself on to the TARDIS and transport itself inside!
The Doctor: Oi! Santa! A word of advice. If you're attacking a man with a sonic screwdriver... Don't let him near the sound system.
The Doctor: It was all in the job title: Head of human resources.
Lance: This time, it's personnel.
Donna: But... we were getting married.
Lance: Well, I couldn’t risk you running off. I had to say yes, and then I was stuck with a woman who thinks the height of excitement is a new-flavoured Pringle! Oh, I had to sit there and listen to all that yap-yap-yap. "Brad and Angelina, is Posh pregnant, X Factor, Atkins diet, feng shui, split ends, text me, text me, text me!" Dear God, the never-ending fountain of fat, stupid trivia! I deserve a medal.
The Doctor: Oh, is that what she’s offered you, the Empress of the Racnoss? What are you, her consort?
Lance:It’s better than a night with her.
Donna: But I love you.
Lance: That’s what made it easy! It’s like you said, Doctor. The big picture. What’s the point of it all if the human race is nothing? That’s what the Empress can give me. The chance to... to go out there, to see it, the size of it all. I think you understand that, don’t you, Doctor?
The Doctor: Guess what I've got, Donna?
The Doctor: Pockets!
Donna: How did that fit in there?
The Doctor: They're bigger on the inside.
The Empress: My children may feast on Martian flesh!
The Doctor: Oh, but I'm not from Mars.
The Empress: Then where?
The Doctor: My home planet is far away and long since gone, but its name lives on...Gallifrey!
The Empress: THEY MURDERED THE RACNOSS!
The Doctor:I warned you. You did this.
