Christmas Carol Preview Screening Report?

The BBC held an invitation only screening at BBC TV Centre this evening. Naturally, Doctor Who Spoilers were there - along with a Scarecrow, a Cyberman and most evilly of all John Birt.

We're sure you don't want a blow by blow account of the whole episode. Well of course you do but we don't want to abuse the Beeb's hospitality and a summary can't really do it justice - this is easily the best Christmas special since The Christmas Invasion and possibly Matt's finest episode yet.

If we say it's a mash up of Continuity Errors, A Christmas Carol and Jaws dedicated followers of this site probably won't be disappointed.

However, we can disclose:

1. Peter Bowles isn't in it. Laura Rogers and Bailey Pepper play Steve North's wife and son. Leo Bill sits on the bridge of the spaceship and doesn't say much.

2. Arthur Darvill appears in the opening credits in a font size that's bigger than his role in this story.

3. There are some really good jokes. We liked the one about kissing and screwdrivers .

4. Continuity geeks will notice nice nods to Pyramids of Mars and School Reunion.

5. Utah isn't this Doctor's first visit to the States.

6. You'll believe a shark can fly. Only the sourest of critics would say it's been jumped over.

7. Michael Gambon is so good he's in it twice.

8. The fez makes a cameo appearance.

9. Katherine Jenkins sings powerfully. Her lungs are set at 11.

10. Toby Haynes is a genius.

There'a wonderful trailer for series 6 at the end - we can't wait for the chance to pore over screencaps on Christmas Night (oh yes we know how to enjoy Christmas!) Unexpectedly there's an Ood and (in a separate frame) a squadron of Nazis. Nice glimpse of a big china doll and what looks like a grey alien (of the sort seen in Jose Chung's From Outer Space in the X Files, for instance). The trailer starts with Paul Critoph (who's in the opening story) wearing clothes that look like they're from the same sort of era as Girl in the Fireplace (but without the wigs and clockwork men). Both River and Amy are seen covered in the tally marks that were noticed during filming (so they weren't applied for an effect to be laid on to). Sure to get the net melting down with speculation were shots of a bearded Doctor and a naked River (well, bare shoulders but a boy can dream .). At first glance the trailer seems 1 and 2 heavy and we didn't notice anything from epsiode 3 but a repeat viewing will doubtless reveal things we missed first time round.

Mekhi Phifer joins Torchwood

Deadline is reporting that American actor Mekhi Phifer is to join the cast of Torchwood: The New World playing Rex Matheson, one of the three leads, alongside John Barrowman and Eve Myles.

Mekhi Phifer is best known for his role as Dr. Gregory Pratt on NBC's long-running medical drama ER.

Born in New York, his acting career began when he was selected for the leading role in Spike Lee's Clockers a role for which he won critical acclaim for his performance as Strike, a young New Jersey drug dealer involved in a murder cover-up. He later appeared in the comedy spoof High School High, in the Columbia/Tristar thriller I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and in Soul Food. In 2002, Phifer starred as Future, opposite Eminem, in Curtis Hanson's film, 8 Mile. Phifer's other television credits include leading roles in MTV's film Carmen: A Hip Hopera and in A Lesson Before Dying a role which eearned him an NAACP Image Award Nomination. He was a regular on the Fox crime show Lie to Me.

REX MATHESON
He’s 28, the golden boy.

Has been, all his life. Harvard education, fast-tracker in the C.I.A., destined for success. Though he’s never taken it easy – Rex hustles, seduces and campaigns to get where he is today. He can talk his way into anything, then charm his way out, fast. He’s made a lot of enemies, but his friends and lovers would defend him to death. His choice of career is significant. Someone like Rex could make a fortune in Wall Street, or Hollywood. But choosing the C.I.A. says a lot about him: that for all his swagger, he does believe in justice. And will fight for it.

Slowly but surely, we see him make friends. He’s thrown together a bunch of people known as Torchwood, the only people who might have the answer to a global mystery. To Rex, at first, they’re a bunch of freaks. Welsh women and World War 2 Captains, what’s that about?! But as they race from one crisis to another, dodging assassins, blackmail, corruption and conspiracy, from Washington to Wales and the slums of Shanghai, Rex forges friendships in the heat of fire. He learns to trust his new colleagues. And they realize that this dangerous, dazzling, reckless man is the best friend they could ever have, in a world going to hell.

They frighten us, men like Rex. We wish we were him; we never will be.

Dr who a christmas carol 20 things from sfx

The episode is a tour de force for Matt Smith. Amy and Rory are pretty much sidelined as Smith explodes like a force of nature from the screen. He is magnificent
  • It’s fantasy, through and through. It’s a Christmas whimsy that pays mere lip service to science fiction. This is Moffat’s vision of the show as a dark fairy tale taken further than ever before. We’re predicting some people will have a problem with this. Your enjoyment may be in relation to your ability to suspend disbelief
  • Two articles of clothing from the Doctor’s past make cameo appearances
  • There’s an unexpected continuity reference to the Tom Baker story “Pyramids Of Mars”
  • The Doctor is asked for some advice that he cannot give
  • The Doctor gets married
  • Katherine can act. You might be worried about a singer who’s never acted before taking on such a major role, but she’s really very good.
  • There are more witty, quotable lines per minute than ever before
  • Some of the FX are outstanding, but a couple are, well, shall we just say… over-ambitious
  • The production design is stunning
  • It’s not the most action-packed of Christmas special. There are some great, exciting set pieces, but mostly it’s a character piece
  • Michael Gambon is, of course, amazing.
  • The names in the opening titles are all Christmas-ed up
  • It’s fish and ships for Christmas!
  • It’s very, very, very Christmassy, and quite emotional
  • There’s a trailer for next season at the end (roll over for spoilery info: the Utah shoot looks incredible, we think we spotted an Ood, and there is a mention of Jammy Dodgers!)
  • Two of the Doctor’s trusted aides aren’t quite so reliable
  • Parents may hope that children won’t ask them to explain one gag
  • The final shot would make a good Christmas card
  • The Doctor has one major costume change (other than ones involving putting Father Christmas hats on)

Dr who eleventh doctor quotes The Eleventh Hour

The Doctor:Can I have an apple? All I can think about... apples! I love apples. Maybe I'm having a craving! That's new. Never had cravings before. Whoo! Look at that!
Amelia: Are you all right?
The Doctor: Just had a fall, all the way down there right to the library. Hell of a climb back up.
Amelia: You're soaking wet.
The Doctor: I was in the swimming pool.
Amelia: You said you were in the library.
The Doctor: So was the swimming pool.
Rory: You just summoned aliens to Earth. Actual aliens. Deadly aliens. Aliens of death. And now you're taking your clothes off... Amy, he's taking his clothes off.
Doctor: Turn your back if it embarrasses you.

Rory: aren't you gonna turn your back?
Amy: Nope.
Amelia: I have an aunt
The Doctor: An aunt. Where's she?
Amelia: Gone.
The Docter:And she left you all alone!
Amelia: I'm not scared.
The Doctor: Of course you're not. You're not scared of anything, Box falls out of sky, man falls out of box, man eats fish custard. And look at you just sittin' there. So you know what I think?
Amelia: What?
The Doctor: Must be a hell of a scary crack in your wall.
The Doctor: You know when grown ups tell you everything is going to be fine and you think they're probably lying to make you feel better?
Amelia:Yes.
The Doctor: Everything's going to be fine.
The Doctor: You're Amelia!
Amy: You're late.
The Doctor: Amelia Pond, you're the little girl!
Amy: I'm Amelia and you're late.
The Doctor: What happened?
Amy: Twelve years.
The Doctor: You hit me with a cricket bat!
Amy: Twelve years!
The Doctor: Cricket bat!
Amy: Twelve years, and four psychiatrists!
The Doctor: Four?
Amy: I kept biting them.
The Doctor: Why?
Amy: They said you weren't real.
The Doctor: And, what sort of job's a kissogram?
Amy Pond: I go to parties, and I... kiss people... with outfits. It's a laugh!
The Doctor: You were a little girl five minutes ago!
Amy Pond: You're worse than my aunt!
The Doctor:I'm the Doctor; I'm worse than everyone's aunt! And that is not how I'm introducing myself.
The Doctor: Where is this? Where am I?
Amy: Leadworth.
The Doctor: Where's the rest of it?
Amy: This is it.
The Doctor: Is there an airport?
Amy: No.
The Doctor: A nuclear power station?
Amy: Haha, no.
The Doctor: Even a little one?
Amy: No.
The Doctor: Nearest city?
Amy: Gloucester, half an hour by car.
The Doctor: We don't have half an hour, do we have a car?
Amy: No.
The Doctor: Oh that's good, fantastic that is. Twenty minutes to save the world and I have a post office. And it's shut!
The Doctor: And the final score is: no TARDIS, no screwdriver, two minutes to spare. Who da man?! Okay, that's... I'm never saying that again. Fine.
The Doctor: One question, just one more. Is this world protected?
The Doctor: Yeah, you're not the first to have come here. Oh, there have been so many. And what you have to ask yourself is... what happened to them?
The Doctor: Hello. I'm the Doctor. Basically... run.
Amy Pond: I thought... well, I started to think you were just a madman with a box.
The Doctor: Amy Pond, there's something you better understand about me, 'cause it's important and one day your life may depend on it. I am definitely a madman with a box
