An Ode to Dr. Who's Matt Smith by Emily V. Gordon

I've never been a die-hard Dr. Who fan. I watched the long-running series on PBS when I was little, but even though it's right up my geeky Anglophile alley, I felt like I'd be showing up late to the party, so I resisted joining the fan ranks as an adult. Then I saw a clip of the newest Dr. Who, with Matt Smith as The Doctor, and I was hooked. I've since become a Dr. Who fanatic, and now that the most recent season (the fifth of the show's modern incarnation, but the thirty-first overall) has been released on DVD in the States and Matt Smith has appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson for a Dr. Who-themed episode, it's time for you to become a fanatic, too.

For the uninitiated, Dr. Who himself is the only surviving member of a race of beings called "timelords," and every few years, he changes physical form. (It's a brilliant way to keep the show fresh forever, no?) What the various Dr. Whos have had in common over the years is that they've all been infinitely wise geniuses who travel through space and time, solving mysteries while accompanied by trusty female companions. (Sexual tension can run high at times, but there's no hooking up-it wouldn't be right, since timelords aren't human.) Some Doctors have been old and wise, some bumbling and silly, but all were fearless.

What Matt Smith brings to the Dr. Who table is that he's the youngest one ever, and he's feistier, more whimsical, and more genuinely excited by danger than his previous counterparts. And let's not mince words: He's pretty. He's tall, all pale skin and angles, and has what could be referred to as "modelface." Top that off with that perfectly tousled shock of hair and he looks like a aristocratic hipster who also fronts the coolest band you've never heard of. He plays the role like he's too cool to be embroiled in time travel, but since he just so happens to be a time traveler, we might as well just dive in and go with it, right? In the most recent season of Dr. Who, he fought stone angels, helped Da Vinci Van Gogh (Sorry! New fan, remember?) find his sanity, and confronted insane aliens-all using only his considerable wit and intellect.

On last night's Late Late Show, Smith charmed Craig Ferguson (and the crowd) with tales of being in America to film the upcoming season of the show, his deft playing of the harmonica (which those daffy British folk call a mouth organ), and the quirky socks he kept flashed in the interview chair.

Matt Smith is already an enormous celebrity across the pond, but the Brits aren't the only ones who're can appreciate well-told, action-packed stories and adorably nerdy heroes. If Matt Smith keeps playing The Doctor so wonderfully and keeps charming the pants off of us during his TV appearances, we'll all be (justifiably) Dr. Who-obsessed in no time.

DWM teasers for A Christmas Carol and Episode Three

Doctor Who Magazine has revealed a couple of teasers, firstly they reveal that in A Christmas Carol Rory and Amy will be orbiting an alien planet on a pleasure cruise spaceship when it finds itself under attack from something very nasty (flying sharks?) while the Doctor has a lot to deal with on the planet below to save the spaceship.

They also reveal that in the Neil Gaiman’s episode, the TARDIS breaks down on an alien junkyard world. “Although Idris is preparing for death as the story begins, she doesn’t actually die. By the time the Doctor and friends meet her she’s gone mad and ends up biting the Time Lord …”

John Barrowman has admitted that he is "very excited" about filming the new series of Torchwood in America.

Torchwood: The New World will see Barrowan reprise his role as Captain Jack Harkness two years after previous series Children of Earth.

"I'm going to be moving to Los Angeles for six months of the year from January," he told Chris Moyles on Radio 1.

"We're filming in Wales and Los Angeles as it's a co-production now with the BBC and the Starz Network. I'm very excited."

He added: "It'll be worked out where we're doing the chunk of filming in the Cardiff area prior to going out and then we'll film our chunk in Los Angeles."

The actor made his full debut as the Time Lord earlier this year and is currently filming a second run of episodes.

In an appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, he explained: "I take it a year at a time. I'm going to do this year, and maybe next year as well. I would like to."

Smith also admitted that he was pleased with the decision to film a forthcoming two-part episode in the US.

Moffat Wants Captain Jack Back!?

Russell T. Davies has revealed that new Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat wants to feature Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) in the show at some point in the future. Davies made the comments in an interview with IGN where he also discussed how he and Moffat exchange storyline details on future plots on Doctor Who and its spin-off shows The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood so nothing clashes between the three shows.

Speaking to IGN, Russell T. Davies had the following to say:

"Well, Steven said he'd love to see Jack in Doctor Who. So if Steven says that, Steven will make it happen, I would think. That's not inside information, but I bet one day it will happen. I'd love to see it. It would be marvellous."

Sarah Jane Adventures: DWM Interview Extended

First up, I believe it's your first Doctor Who-related long fiction to see publication, though you've been hovering round the franchise for a while (including Doctor Who Magazine itself, obviously - you needn't think I'm not going to mention that!) But you have, I believe, worked in other franchises and in developing your own completely original work... so what's the appeal of 'playing with other peoples toys'...?
"Outside of Whosville, I wrote the Friday The 13th novel Hate-Kill-Repeat for New Line Cinema; worked on a web drama series called Tempting Fates; wrote the short films Ghost Writer and Look At Me; some radio comedy; and, most recently, a supernatural horror feature film called Stormhouse which was shot in England this Summer.
"In Whosville, I’ve written the Fourth Doctor short Christmas Every Day for Short Trips: Christmas Around The World; the forthcoming audio short The Lions Of Trafalgar for an as-yet-undetermined audio Short Trips collection; and the title-story of December’s BF collection The Demons Of Red Lodge & Other Stories.
"So yes, this is indeed my first DW-related long fiction to see publication, which is very exciting. The appeal of playing with other people’s toys depends entirely on the quality of the toys – and in writing a Sarah Jane Adventures story you’re dealing with a proper icon in Sarah Jane herself. So it’s been wonderful to create a brand new story for her and the gang."

Without going into more detail than you need to – what kind of story are we talking here?

"As its title might suggest, Deadly Download concerns an alien attack via the internet. Sarah Jane’s super-computer Mr Smith alerts her to some highly abnormal internet activity on Bannerman Road, plunging the team into a whirlwind of exploding computers and airborne menace! This invasion turns out to have an unexpected connection with the corporate world. While I’d never want to write a preachy ‘Hey kids, don’t do this!’ kind of story, Deadly Download might well have the side-effect of making younger listeners think twice before chatting to strangers online..."

DOCTOR WHO Producer Piers Wenger Exclusive Interview; Talks About the Fifth Series, the New Doc and Filming in America

new TARDIS. The time travel vessel, or Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space, has been pimped up for the fifth series of the classic BBC series Doctor Who, just released on DVD and Blu-ray with an array of bonuses.

It may look like a phone booth, but its interior is as big as the west wing of the Starship Enterprise. According to producer Piers Wenger, the revamped interior design reflects “a real mish-mash between old and new, young and old,” much like the show itself, for Doctor Who has traveled through almost five decades seamlessly. And it isn’t merely about time travel, it is a sci-fi phenomenon. Hit the jump to find out more and read my interview with Piers Wenger.

Created in 1963, Doctor Who holds the Guinness World Record for being the most successful and longest-running sci-fi series on television. The original series ran until 1989 and, with the exception of a TV movie in 1996, the Doctor remained dormant throughout the 90s. He was probably avoiding the bad fashion of the decade, but finally returned to earthly screens in 2005.

Torchwood: What to Expect From The New World

IGN: We've heard this new CIA character, Rex, is somewhat the entry point of The New World. Will we get to Jack and Gwen pretty quickly?

Davies: Too soon to say, but I'm very aware of that. I will enjoy playing with that and I can see already that a slight myth is going to build up of sorts, saying that Rex is our only entry point. When we first see Gwen, you will see what it essentially was in the series [before]. There are no super powers, there's no credits, no money, no special privileges. You'll see an ordinary woman whose life is about to take an extraordinary turn. So there will be an awful lot of new viewers where if you've never seen Gwen Cooper in your life, you will see a woman with a husband, a baby, thrown into a threat and you'll latch onto her immediately. Even the way that Captain Jack is introduced is written so that you'll latch onto that as well.

IGN: With Jack, I would guess it's one of those delicate balancing acts, because as you're well aware, there is a portion of the fandom still mourning Inato, some of whom will want Jack to still be mourning him. But of course, you want to move forward and not have the character be stuck in sadness.

Davies: Of course, we're aware of that. It's a love of a great actor and a great performance. It's not just the love of Ianto, I think it's probably the love of Gareth David-Lloyd, which is a wonderful thing to see. Even Gareth now has done interviews now, saying, "It's time to move on." He's very kind and respectful. Of course, it's not a blank slate for Jack. Of course that past haunts him. Not just Ianto, but the terrible events that he took after Ianto's death with his own grandson will haunt him. Nonetheless the story is at least two years later. And with any fictional character, if they walked into scene one dragging their baggage behind him… If you sit down and someone starts telling you their whole family history, you don't want to spend any time with them. So that's true of Jack and everyone in life. So you've got to be aware of that. We'll handle it delicately and suitably and with a great deal of respect, but nonetheless, the imperative is to move on.

IGN: What is the dynamic with Rex and the other new character, Ester? What kind of sensibilities do they bring to Torchwood?

Davies: I don't want to give away too much. Rex certainly brings dynamism and energy and hostility towards Torchwood. He wants to know who the hell they are and why the hell they're so important and they can get out of his way… at first. There's a great, fun, sparky, sexy sort of antagonism to the whole thing. Ester is much calmer, but through the course of the story, she suffers some great, powerful, emotional stories as it goes on. In some ways, she's a bit of an innocent abroad and soon learns not to be. And that plays off Gwen's experience with these things. The fact that Gwen still is the most ordinary woman in the world, and Jack's huge perspective of things, having lived for thousands of years… Just telling Rex that he can't die is a hilarious scene. There's a lot of fresh material there that we'll mine, but again the new story will always move us forward.

IGN: Is there room going forward for Jack to have a new love interest? Or will that wait awhile?

Davies: He's not one to wait, is he? And again, that's touching on an area where you don't want to cheapen it and you want to respect it, but at the same time, no one wants to deny Jack his life. As with your friends in real life; If you are unlucky enough or sad enough to know people in these circumstances, you do not want the remaining partner's life to end. So no matter how much he loved Ianto, that love has to become a really positive and enabling thing that will allow Jack to move forward.

IGN: You have a wonderful writing staff for The New World…

Gardner: We were so lucky! Oh my god, they were brilliant together.

Karen Gillan to star in 'Romeo And Brittney'

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan will lead the cast of David Baddiel's directorial debut Romeo And Brittney.

The actress has been cast as a New Jersey high-schooler who gets sent back in time to 13th century Verona and finds herself trapped in Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet.

"We both love literate teen comedies and we wanted to do our own version," he said. "After all, 10 Things I Hate About You was based on The Taming Of The Shrew just as Clueless was based on Jane Austen’s Emma and Easy A is inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter.

"And what is Twilight if it's not Romeo And Juliet with vampires and werewolves?”

In The Past - The Human League – Tom Baker

Casting and titles revealed for a two-parter

Sarah Smart who plays Anne-Britt Hoglund in the 2008 BBC crime drama is playing Jennifer Lucas in the a two-part story.

You'll notice that we haven't said which two-part story. That's because we're not entirely sure. Her ?CV reveals? the titles of these episodes to be The Rebel Flesh and Gangers, but possibly more interesting is that it states that the director of the episodes is New Tricks, Spooks and Hustle director ?Julian Simpson? rather than Toby Haynes which rather begs the question of whether she's appearing in the opening two-parter or another two-parter that will presumably make up the next block of filming.

Smart began her career on the CITV show Woof! and has since starred in shows such as At Home with the Braithwaites with Peter Davison and the BBC's Sparkhouse, 2002 modern-take on Wuthering Heights. She will be appearing with James Nesbitt in the forthcoming ITV drama Monroe and in the Midsomer Murders episode "Echoes of the Dead"

Dr who tenth doctor quotes The Sound of Drums

The Doctor:That's him... he's Prime Minister. The Master is Prime Minister of Great Britain.
The Doctor:The Master and his wife!
The Master This country has been sick! This country needs healing. This country needs medicine. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that was this country really needs, right now...is a doctor.
Mr Saxon: A glorious day! Downing Street rebuilt. The cabinet in session. Let the work of government begin.
Mr Saxon: Oh go on, crack a smile. It's funny, isn't it? Albert? Funny? No? A little bit?
Albert Dumfries, MP: Very funny, sir. But if we could get down to business, there is the matter of policy, of which we have very little.
Mr Saxon: No no no no no. Before we start all that, I just wanted to say: thank you. Thank you, one and all, you ugly, fat-faced bunch of wet, snivelling traitors.
Albert: Yes, quite. Very funny, but I think—
Mr Saxon: No. No. That wasn't funny. You see, I'm not making myself very clear. Funny is like this. [exaggerates a grin.] Not funny is like this. And right now, I'm not like [grins again.], I'm like, because you are traitors. Yes, you are! As soon as you saw the votes swinging my way, you abandoned your parties and jumped on the Saxon bandwagon. So, this is your reward.
Albert: Excuse me, Prime Minister, but do you mind my asking, what is that?
Mr Saxon:  It's a gas mask.
Albert: I beg your pardon?
Mr Saxon: It's a gas mask.
Albert: Yes, but why are you wearing it?
Mr Saxon:Well, because of the gas.
Albert: I'm sorry?
Mr Saxon:Because of the gas.
Albert: What gas?!?
Mr Saxon: This gas.
Albert: You're insane!!
The Doctor: So... Prime Minister, then.
The Master:I know! It's good, isn't it?
The Doctor: Who are those creatures? 'Cause there's no such thing as the Toclafane. That's just a made up name, like the Bogeyman.
The Master: Do you remember all those fairy tales about the Toclafane when we were kids? Back home... Where is it, Doctor?
The Doctor: Gone.
The Master: ...How can Gallifrey be gone?
The Doctor: It burnt.
The Master: And the Time Lords?
The Doctor: Dead. And the Daleks, more or less. What happened to you?
The Master: The Time Lords only resurrected me because they knew I'd be the perfect warrior for a Time War. I was there when the Dalek Emperor took control of the Cruciform. I saw it. I ran. I ran so far. Made myself human so they would never find me, because I was so scared.
The Doctor: I know.
The Master: All of them!? But not you, which must mean...
The Doctor:I was the only one who could end it. And I did, I tried, I tried everything...
The Master:What did it feel like, though? Two almighty civilisations, burning!? Oh, tell me, how did that feel!?
The Doctor: Stop it!
The Master: You must have been like a god!
The Doctor: I've been alone ever since. But not anymore; don't you see all we've got left is each other?
The Master: Are you asking me out on a date?
The Doctor: You could stop this right now,we can leave this planet, we can fight across the constellations if that's what you want, but not on Earth!
The Master: Too late.
The Doctor:Why do you say that?
The Master: The drumming! Can't you hear it? I thought it would stop, but it never does; never ever stops, inside my head. The drumming, Doctor, the constant drumming.
Captain Jack: So Doctor, tell us; who is he? How did the ancient race of Time Lords create a psychopath?
Martha: Yeah, and what is he to you? Like a colleague or...?
The Doctor: He was a friend, at first...
Martha: For a moment there, I thought you were gonna say he was your long-lost brother.
The Doctor: You've been watching too much TV!
Captain Jack: But all the legends of Gallifrey made it sound so perfect.
The Doctor:Well, perfect to look at, maybe. And it was, it was beautiful. They used to call it the Shining World of the Seven Systems. And on the continent of Wild Endeavour, in the mountains of Solace and Solitude, there stood the Citadel of the Time Lords. The oldest and most mighty race in the universe. Looking down on the galaxies below, sworn never to interfere, only to watch. Children of Gallifrey were taken from their families at the age of eight, to enter the Academy. Some say that's where it all began, when he was a child. That's when the Master saw eternity. As a novice, he was taken for initiation. He stood in front of the Untempered Schism. It's a gap in the fabric of reality through which could be seen the whole of the vortex. We stand there, eight years old, staring at the raw power of Time and Space, just a child. Some would be inspired. Some would run away. And some would go mad. Oh, I dunno.
Martha: What about you?
The Doctor: Oh, the ones that ran away! I never stopped.
Captain Jack:Since we're telling stories, there's something I haven't told you!
The Doctor:You work for Torchwood!?
Captain Jack: I swear to you, it's different. It's changed! There's only half a dozen of us left now!
The Doctor: Everything that Torchwood did, and you're part of it!?
Captain Jack: The old regime was destroyed at Canary Wharf! I rebuilt it, I changed it, and when I did that, I did it for you, in your honour!
The Doctor:Oh! I know what it's like. It's like when you fancy someone and they don't even know you exist. That's what it's like. Come on!
Captain Jack: You too, huh?
Martha: I'm going to kill him!
Captain Jack:What do you say I use this perception filter to walk up behind him and break his neck!?
The Doctor: Now that sounds like Torchwood!
Captain Jack: Still a good plan!
The Doctor:He's a Time Lord, which makes him my responsibility. I'm not here to kill him...I'm here to save him.
The Master: Shall we decimate them? That sounds good, nice word, decimate. Remove one tenth of the population!
The Master: And so it came to pass that the human race fell, and the Earth was no more. And I looked down upon my new dominion. As Master of all. And I thought it... good.

Daleks decide against exterminating the Central Library

THE Daleks were among the sci-fi characters who invaded the Central Library as part of a celebration of the genre.

The creatures, who are Dr Who’s sworn enemies, managed to overcome their evil desire to exterminate when they met dozens of families and collected money for Children In Need on Saturday.

Other characters at the library, in Regent Circus, included K9, also from Doctor Who, a Tusken Raider from Star Wars and crew members from Star Trek.

Children’s librarian Anish Noble-Harrison, who co-ordinated the event, said it had gone fantastically well.
