Celebrating the Series: The Lodger

The Lodger proved a popular episode with people loving the Doctor's attempts to blend in...

Nikolai said, 'The Lodger was an amazing episode, showing the Doctor at his best. It was hilarious seeing him trying to fit into a human society (and failing!)' and Aditi told us, '...out of all of the episodes The Lodger was my favourite, because it was hilarious watching the Doctor try to be a normal bloke.' John agreed, 'I thought it was very funny with the Doctor trying to be human and normal. The best moment was the Doctor trying to save Craig with a tooth brush and wearing nothing but a towel. It just shows how alien the Doctor really is.'

Katie wrote, 'The Lodger was quite possibly the best episode of the season. I loved seeing the Doctor trying to be normal (and failing epically!) I couldn't stop laughing, seeing the Doctor play soccer (or 'football' as you call it)... I'm glad that Craig is returning for Season 6, and I hope the new episode will be as funny as The Lodger.'

The football scene was also a favourite with many people including Liam, Mike and Amy who wrote, 'My fave moment had to be the footie match in The Lodger because being a footie fan its good to see something like that in my fave programme.'

James Corden had a lot of fans and Gabrielle summed up the feelings of many: 'Got to be one of my favourite episodes since the new seasons started. Absolutely brilliant and I'm delighted James Corden will be coming back!!'

Liz told us, 'One of the episodes that really stood out for me was The Lodger. I felt that this revealed more of the Doctor than we've ever seen before. Completely out of his comfort zone and having to live time in the right order... His hilarious nonsensical speeches and the way his full character comes across in this episode makes it one of my absolute favourites!'

Trevor contacted us to say, 'The Lodger was a lovely story with the alien business almost feeling unimportant next to the serious business of Craig and Sophie's hopelessness at realising they are made for each other!'

And whilst we're on the subject of Sophie, we're giving the final word today to Amie and Ashleigh who told us, '... it was brilliant how the Doctor attempted to appear human, but really struggled. The way he spoke to Sophie in that episode about ambitions really inspired us to aim for our dreams!'

Karen gillan - I was bullied for being ginger

Dr Who star Karen Gillan has told The sun how she was bullied at school - for being GINGER.

The 5ft 11in beauty said she couldn't wait to leave her hometown of Inverness after being taunted over her flaming locks and her height by cruel classmates.

Leggy Karen, who went to Charleston Academy in the city, said: "I remember walking down the corridor and someone going, 'Eurgh, you're tall, lanky and ginger!' I'd been itching to get out for years."

But the 23-year-old star defied the bullies by shooting to fame as a model and the telly Timelord's latest sexy companion Amy Pond.

And she said defiantly: "I'd never had a problem with being tall, and in terms of having red hair I always had a belief it would benefit me in the long run."

Karen left school at 16 to attend a drama course at Telford College in Edinburgh, before moving to the prestigious Italia Conti theatre school in London.

She was picked up as the face of trendy fashion house Boing, and hit the runways as a catwalk model for top designer Allegra Hicks.

Then, in her Dr Who debut she appeared in a STRIPPOGRAM WPC costume. After that she earned the accolade of the Timelord's sexiest ever companion, but Karen joked: "Dr Who assistants have been like that since the beginning, in leather bikinis and stuff, so this is nothing."

She now gets swamped with fan mail from smitten male followers.

Karen said she's not been sent anything "particularly alarming" - adding: "One guy sends me a postcard from every place he's gone to. It's really sweet."

Her celebrity lifestyle is a million miles from her up-bringing in the Highlands

Dr who quotes Daleks The stolen earth and Journeys end

First Dalek: Dalek Fleet in battle formation.
Second Dalek: All systems locked and primed.
Third Dalek: Crucible at 90 percent efficiency.
Fourth Dalek: The human harvest will commence!
Dalek: Supreme Dalek on the bridge!
Supreme Dalek: Soon the Crucible will be complete. We have waited long for this ultimate destiny! Now the Daleks are the masters of Earth!
Multitude of Daleks: Daleks are the masters of Earth! Daleks are the masters of Earth!
Daleks: UNIT forces will be exterminated! Annihilate UNIT! EXTERMINATE!
Davros:  Supreme Dalek, is there news?
Supreme Dalek: Earth has been subjugated!
Davros: I mean, is there news of him?
Supreme Dalek: Negative. No reports of Time Lord. We are beyond the Doctor's reach.
Davros: Fascinating. If I had not elevated you beyond crude emotions, I could almost mistake that tone for one of victory. Beware your pride!
Supreme Dalek: The Doctor cannot stop us!
Davros: And yet, Dalek Caan is uneasy.
Supreme Dalek: The Abomination is insane!
Davros: Show respect! Without Dalek Caan, none of this would be possible, and he speaks only the truth...
Dalek Caan: He is coming. The threefold man, he dances in the lonely places. O Creator of us all, The Doctor is coming!
Dalek Caan: He is here. The Dark Lord is come.
Dalek Caan: I flew into the wild and fire! I danced and died a thousand times!
Dalek: Halt! You will come with me!
Wilfred Mott: Will I heck!
Dalek:My vision is not impaired!
Dalek: Hostility will not be tolerated! Exterminate! Exterminate!
Davros: The Children of Time are moving against us, but everything is falling into place.
Davros: Welcome - Doctor - To my new empire.
Dalek: The Daleks reign supreme, all hail the Daleks!
Harriet Jones: Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister.
Dalek: Yes, we know who you are.
Dalek: All humans will leave their homes. The male, the female, the descendants.
Man: Where are you taking us?
Dalek: Daleks do not answer human questions. Stand in line.
Supreme Dalek: Emergency! Locate the TARDIS! Find the Doctor!
Davros: He will go to the Earth, to find his precious human allies!
Dalek Caan: And death is coming. Oh, I can SEE it! Everlasting death for the most-faithful companion
Supreme Dalek:Behold, Doctor! Behold the might of the true Dalek race!
Supreme Dalek:Take them to the Vault. They are the playthings of Davros now.
Davros:Activate the holding cells.Excellent! Even when powerless, a Time Lord is best contained.
The Doctor:Still scared of me?
Davros: It is time we talked, Doctor, after so very long.
The Doctor: No, no, no, no, no, we're not doing the nostalgia tour; I wanna know what's happening right here, right now! Cos the Supreme Dalek said "Vault", as in dungeon, cellar, prison...you're not in charge of the Daleks, are you? They've got you locked away down here in the basement like the basement like a what? Servant? Slave? Court jester?
Davros: We have...an arrangement.
The Doctor:No, no, no, no, no! I've got the word; you're the Daleks' pet!
Davros: So very full of fire, is he not!? And to think, you crossed entire universes, striding paralell to paralell to find him again!
The Doctor: Leave her alone!
Davros:  She is mine, Doctor, to do with as I please!
Rose: Then why am I still alive?
Davros: You must be here; it was foretold. Even the Supreme Dalek would not dare to contradict the prophecies of Dalek Caan!
Dalek Caan: So cold and dark...fire is coming; the endless flames!
Rose: What is that thing?
The Doctor: You've met before. The last of the Cult of Skaro. But it flew into the Time War, unprotected.
Davros: Caan did more than that; he saw Time! Its infinite complexity and majesty raging through his mind, and...he saw you. Both of you.
Dalek Caan: This I have forseen, in the wild and the wind; the Doctor will be here as witness at the end of everything. The Doctor and his precious Children of Time! And one of them will die!
The Doctor:Was it you, Caan!? Did you kill Donna!? Why did the TARDIS door close!? TELL ME!
Davros: Oh, that's it! The anger! The fire! The rage of a Time Lord...WHO BUTCHERED MILLIONS! There he is...why so shy? Show your companion. Show her your true self! Dalek Caan has promised me that too!
Dalek Caan: I have seen, at the time of ending, the Doctor's soul will be revealed!
The Doctor: What does that mean?
Davros: We will discover it together. Our final journey, because the ending approaches; the testing begins.
The Doctor: Testing of what?
Davros: The Reality Bomb.
Davros: Behold, the apotheosis of my genius!
Davros: This is my ultimate victory, Doctor. The destruction of reality itself!
Squad of Daleks: Exterminieren! Exterminieren! Halt! Sonst werden wir sie Exterminieren! Sie sind jetzt ein Gefangener der Daleks!
Supreme Dalek: Prepare for universal detonation! The Fleet will gather at the Crucible! All Daleks will return to shelter from the cataclysm! We will become the only lifeforms IN EXISTENCE!
Davros: The Doctor, the man who keeps running, never looking back because he dare not...out of shame! This is my final victory, Doctor: I have shown you yourself!
Davros: Stand witness, Time Lord; Stand witness, humans: Your strategies have failed, your weapons are useless, and... oh, the end of the universe has come!
Davros: I was wrong about your warriors, Doctor. They are pathetic!
Davros: But you promised me, Dalek Caan! Why did you not foresee this!?
The Doctor: Oh I think he did. Something's been manipulating the timelines for ages, getting Donna Noble to the right place at the right time!
Dalek Caan: This would always have happened. I only helped, Doctor!
Davros: You betrayed the Daleks?!
Dalek Caan: I saw the Daleks! What we have done throughout time and space! I saw the truth of us, Creator, and I decreed "No more!"
Supreme Dalek: I will descend to the Vault!
Jack Harkness: HEADS UP!
Supreme Dalek: Davros, you have betrayed us!
Davros: IT WAS DALEK CAAN!
Supreme Dalek: The Vault will be purged! You will all be EXTERMINATED!
The Doctor: Davros, come with me! I promise I can save you!
Davros: Never forget, Doctor: YOU DID THIS! I name you, forever: YOU are the Destroyer of Worlds!
Dalek Caan: One will still die.

Lost Stories Update

Series three of The Lost Stories has been moved up the schedules, commencing in October 2011 (although the run will break from January 2012, and then return in April). The first three releases star Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor alongside Janet Fielding as Tegan and Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, in stories originally devised for television but never made.

October’s release is The Elite by John Dorney, writing from a story by Barbara Clegg (Enlightenment). Ryan Sampson (The Sontaran Stratagem, The Poison Sky) guest stars as Thane.

“The Elite is set on an alien world populated only by the young, who are being trained for military excellence by a sinister, unseen High Priest,” says producer David Richardson. “It’s a big roller-coaster ride for the Fifth Doctor, which builds to a wonderfully cataclysmic and exciting climax.”

November’s release is Hexagora by Paul Finch, writing from a storyline by Peter Ling (The Mind Robber) and Hazel Adair.

“I got in touch with Hazel and the estate of Peter Ling and they were only too delighted to see this story finally made,” says David. “As I write this we’re just about to go into studio, with a guest cast that includes Jacqueline Pearce (Blake’s 7) and Toby Hadoke (Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf).”

The Children of Seth follows in December, originally written by Christopher Bailey (Kinda, Snakedance) and adapted by Marc Platt (Ghost Light).

“Everyone loved this script,” says Richardson, “which is dark and political, and filled with some interesting characters with their own agendas. And we’ve got Honor Blackman, David Warner, Vernon Dobtcheff and Adrian Lukis all in the same Doctor Who story – how great is that?"

Return of the Robots

The Seventh Doctor returns to audio in July in a brand new mini-season from Big Finish, and he kicks off by meeting up with some familiar impassive faces… the Robots of Death.

“In many ways, Robophobia picks up where The Robots of Death left off in 1977,” says Big Finish executive producer Nicholas Briggs, who has also written the story, “but it goes in an entirely new direction, and I don't just mean out into space.”

The guest cast for Robophobia is led by Nicola Walker, best known for playing Ruth in TV’s Spooks, as Liv Chenka.

“We’ve wanted to work with Nicola for ages,” says producer David Richardson, “and suddenly everything fell into place and she was available for this story. And she was absolutely brilliant, and so lovely and funny. She really embraced the opportunity to appear in the audio adventures of Doctor Who.” The cast also includes Toby Hadoke (Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf) and Dan Starkey (who plays Sontarans in the Doctor Who TV series).

The mini-season takes a short break in August, as Colin Baker returns as the Doctor, accompanied by Nicola Bryant as Peri, for the 150th Big Finish Doctor Who story. Recorded Time comprises four one-part adventures, each written by a different author.

Sylvester’s back for a double outing in September, beginning with The Doomsday Quatrain, by Emma Beeby and 2000 AD mainstay Gordon Rennie.

“The TARDIS lands in 17th century Florence,” reveals script editor Alan Barnes, “where local prophet Nostradamus has to face the fact that the world will end not in some far-off distant future – but right here, right now! And if you listen carefully, you might hear some hints about the Seventh Doctor's Big Finish future too..."

The guest star for this story is David Schofield (Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3), who plays the famed seer.

The season ends with House of Blue Fire, written by Mark Morris (whose previous audio credits include Plague of the Daleks). The guest cast is led by Timothy West, whose earlier Big Finish appearances include Phobos and Cuddlesome.

"It’s exactly the sort of thing you'd expect from an acclaimed horror novelist,” says Barnes. “There’s an isolated house, a bunch of terrified squaddies, a legendary monster... We've tried to make sure there's something nasty for everyone - be they claustrophobes, aquaphobes, even 'blattodeaphobes'...!"
