Interview with Sylvester McCoy, Time and the Rani DVD review

It certainly has been a busy week here at DWP Towers, quizzes and commentary tracks keeping the 50th episode celebration week ticking nicely along.

We have saved the best for last though - episode 50 is now yours to enjoy, and there is a lot to enjoy in this little file!

First up is an interview with the Seventh Doctor and soon to be Lord of the Rings Wizard, Sylvester McCoy.

Tom was lucky enough to have a bit of a chat with McCoy in his recent trip to the Big Finish studios. We think you will find this interview unlike any other you have heard from him.

Back in the studio, the boys review the Seventh Doctor's first adventure, now unleashed on DVD - Time and the Rani. This much maligned story has been given the 2Entertain deluxe DVD treatment and we look at the release and the story itself.

Doctor Who Stars on Canvas

Several Doctor Who stars have contributed to a new project to raise money for a charity providing special days for seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds throughout the United Kingdom.

Organised by The Willow Foundation and British artist, Julie-Anne Gilburt, Stars on Canvas is an exhibition of 20x20 cm canvases, each created by different stars from the worlds of sport, art, design, fashion, music and entertainment.

The charity was founded in 1999 by Bob and Megs Wilson as a lasting memorial to their daughter, Anna, who died aged 31. Anna battled cancer for five years, yet during these years she and her family and friends experienced some of their most memorable moments and quality times. The Charity's aim is to replicate the positive impact special days had on both Anna and her family for other seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds throughout the UK.

Pictures already online include submissions from Freema Agyeman and Billie Piper, with contributions from David Tennant, Catherine Tate annd Russell T Davies due to be added within the next few days.

Scots star Kelly MacDonald set to shine as stand-in bride opposite David Tennant

KELLY MACDONALD will be the envy of millions of women in new movie The Decoy Bride - she gets to run off with David Tennant.

The former Trainspotting star plays a girl from the fictional Scots island of Hegg who gets caught up in the drama when a Hollywood starlet chooses to have her wedding there.

Glamorous actress Lara Tyler, played by Trevor Eve's daughter Alice, hires Kelly's character, Katie, as stand-in to keep the paparazzi off her trail.

But Katie soon catches the eye of groom James Aubrey, played by hunky former Dr Who David.

The Decoy Bride was partly shot in Scotland this summer, with locations including castles in Dumfriess-shire and the coast around Inveraray, Argyll.

And film agency Scottish Screen have backed the project with £300,000, the biggest grant they can award for a feature film.

Producer Douglas Rae said: "It is a homage to Local Hero, which after 30 years has never been rivalled as a Scottish film comedy hit.

"It's inspired by big Hollywood-style weddings in Scotland, like Madonna's."

Doctor’s deadly foe prowls the streets

A TRIO of avid Dr Who fans have built their own dalek.

Richard Clark, from Pinehurst, has been a follower of the series since he was a child and built his first dalek out of paper and cardboard, when he was 14 and went to Ferndale School in Swindon.

Today he is the main carer for his son Chris, 16, who suffers from ASD and Asperger’s syndrome, and for the last five months they have been creating their own mobile dalek that Chris can ride in and operate.

“I am a bit of an inventor,’’ said Richard.

“We went to Cardiff’s Dr Who exhibition and to the International Air Tattoo last year with the Dalek Building Guild where Chris drove around in one for most of the day. He loves the dalek.’’

Richard, Chris and his eldest son Steve created their dalek with a head that rotates, an eye that moves up and down and a body that is propelled by wheelchair motors.

And Richard found an electronic buffer at a scrap yard, spiining it to polish the dalek’s head to a high gloss.

Creating the voice box was rather tricky as they had to research it on the internet and then build it from scratch, including inventing the tools they needed to build it.

Chris says that it is his grandmother, Mary Clark, who had made it all possible by putting money into the project to help them buy the soldering iron and wire and even the nuts and bolts.

Richard is a bit of a wizard at creating and has built many things in the back garden including an extended bike for Chris to ride that was 9ft long.

Even mum Joanne was roped in to the Dr Who world of her men folk as she had to knit Tom Baker-style scarves when they were little.

Richard is planning to take the dalek along to charity fundraising events particularly if they are for children.

From the Studio of Frank Bellamy

Alan Davis, one of the top comic artists in the business and a genuinely nice guy has long been an admirer of the work of the late Frank Bellamy. Although he never knew Frank, he did help Frank's widow Nancy clear out the artist's studio and asked if he could keep some of the artwork.

Alan has been holding onto the pages for many years, hoping they could one day be used in a book, but as this seems unlikely in the current economic climate he's decided to post them online so that Frank Bellamy's many fans can appreciate them.

Dr who tenth doctor quotes blink

Cathy: Why did you come here anyway?
Sally: I love old things. They make me feel sad.
Cathy: What's good about sad?
Sally: It's happy for deep people.
Video store employee:Go to the police, you stupid woman! Why does nobody ever just go to the police?
Sally: But what is it, what's a police box?
D.I. Billy Shipton: Well, it's a special kind of phone box for policemen. They used to have them all over, but this isn't a real one. The phone's just a dummy and the windows are the wrong size.
Larry: And there he is.
Sally: The Doctor.
Larry: Who's the doctor?
Sally: He's the Doctor.
The Doctor: Yep, that's me.
Sally: Okay, that's scary.
Larry: No, it sounds like he's replying, but he always says that.
The Doctor: Yes I do.
Larry: And that.
The Doctor: Yep, and this.
Sally: He can hear us! Oh my God, you can really hear us!
Larry: Of course he can't hear us. Look, I've got a transcript, see? Everything he says: 'Yep, that's me,' 'Yes I do,' 'Yep, and this,' next is...
The Doctor and Larry: Are you going to read out the whole thing?
Larry: Sorry.
The Doctor: People don't understand time. It's not what you think it is.
Sally: Then what is it?
The Doctor: Complicated.
Sally: Tell me.
The Doctor: Very complicated.
Sally: I'm clever, and I'm listening, and don't patronise me because people have died and I'm not happy. Tell me.
The Doctor: People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect... but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly... timey-wimey... stuff.
The Doctor: Fascinating race, the Weeping Angels. The only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely. No mess, no fuss, they just zap you into the past and let you live to death. The rest of your life used up and blown away in the blink of an eye. You die in the past, and in the present they consume the energy of all the days you might have had, all your stolen moments. They're creatures of the abstract. They live off potential energy.
Billy Shipton: What in God's name are you talking about?
Martha Jones: Trust me, just nod when he stops for breath.
The Doctor: Tracked you down with this. This is my timey-wimey detector. It goes ding when there's stuff. Also, it can boil an egg at 30 paces, whether you want it to or not, actually, so I've learned to stay away from hens. It's not pretty when they blow.
The Doctor: [on video] The Angels have the phone box.
Larry: "The Angels have the phone box". That's my favourite; I've got that on a t-shirt!
Sally: What do you mean "Angels"? You mean those statue things?
The Doctor: Creatures from another world.
Sally: But they're just statues.
The Doctor: Only when you see them.
Sally: What does that mean?
The Doctor: Lonely assassins, they used to be called. No one quite knows where they came from, but they're as old as the Universe—or very nearly. And they've survived this long because they have the most perfect defense system ever evolved: they're quantum locked. They don't exist when they're being observed. The moment they're seen by any other living creature, they freeze into rock. No choice, it's a fact of their biology. In the sight of any living thing they literally turn to stone. And you can't kill a stone. 'Course, a stone can't kill you either, but then you turn your head away. Then you blink, and oh yes it can.
Sally: Don't take your eyes off that.
The Doctor: That's why they cover their eyes. They're not weeping, they can't risk looking at each other. Their greatest asset is their greatest curse. They can never be seen. Loneliest creatures in the Universe. And I'm sorry. I am very, very sorry, it's up to you now.
Sally: What am I supposed to do?
The Doctor: The blue box; it's my time machine. There is a world of time energy in there that they could feast on forever, but the damage they would do could switch off the Sun. You have got to send it back to me.
Sally: How? How?!
The Doctor: And that's it, I'm afraid, there's no more from you on the transcript, that's the last I've got. I don't know what stopped you talking, but I can guess: they're coming; the Angels are coming for you, but listen—your life could depend on this—don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast, faster than you could believe. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck.
