Doctor Who star Karen Gillan has a bad hair (and dress) day

Where's Doctor Who to save the day when you need him?

Poor Karen Gillan could have used help from the Time Lord in battling the elements yesterday - and perhaps transport her to bedtime while he's at it.

The red-headed sex bomb certainly didn't look at her best outside her London home - and was further hampered by a shapeless dark green velvet dress that swamped her slender figure.

Karen Gillan

Exterminate: Karen Gillan looked ready to drop after returning to her North London home following a shopping trip yesterday

The 22-year-old had been shopping on a dull day in North London, and was caught with her hair plastered across her face by the wind.

With her still beautiful porcelain complexion and flame-red hair, the normally glamorous Ms Gillan could be forgiven for dressing down however, as she was having some time off from the hard work of shooting the next series of the 46-year-old Sci-Fi show.

She's certainly someone who likes to experiment with her own unique style anyway  - earlier this month she was sporting more of a goth look than the pre-Raphaelite style attire she sported at the Baftas.

Meanwhile, Matt Smith, 27, who plays the Doctor, showed an equal interest in fashion at the weekend when he was out and about watching girlfriend Daisy Lowe strut the catwalk with her mother Pearl at the Vintage At Goodwood Festival.

Matt, who plays the 11th Doctor, attempted to go incognito in dark sunglasses as he sat on the front row of the event, applauding loudly.

That's better: Karen's hair was slightly more tamed as she stepped out in north London today

Matt and Karen's first series as the famed Gallifreyan and his companion concluded in the finale The Big Bang at the end of June.

Doctor Who returns to our screens at Christmas before returning for another full series in 2011.

MAJOR WARNING II

The rise of mobile banking makes us think of greater productivity, speed and convenience. Rarely do we associate this technological advancement with the risks of robbery and bank fraud. But recent news of one of a sophisticated series of cyber attacks has created greater awareness of the rising threat of attacks by “Trojan viruses.”
The Attack

Cybercriminals broke into the accounts of thousands of British Internet banking customers by using a malicious computer program that hides on home computers. The program stole confidential passwords and account details from at least 3,000 individuals. Since the new virus displayed fake bank statements, it succeeded in emptying bank accounts without the owner’s knowledge. Internet security experts estimate at least £675,000 ($869,400) has been illegally transferred from the UK in the last month via the virus.

The Virus

Trojans hide in websites, E-mails or downloads. The latest attack used a Trojan called “Zeus v3,” which hides inside advertisements on legitimate websites. Once installed
on a home computer, the program waits until the person visits his or her online bank. Once this happens, it secretly records their account details and passwords and uses the information to transfer up to £5,000 ($6,440) to other bank accounts.

How to Keep Your Account Safe

You can protect yourself from these threatening viruses by keeping your anti-virus software up to date and keeping your firewalls set to the highest level. Also, avoid opening an E-mail attachments that end in “.exe” (They are ‘executable’ files and can do what they please within your system.) If you think your machine has already been infected, contact your bank immediately. More often than not, your bank will assess whether you are a genuine victim of fraud and will reimburse you.

MAJOR WARNING

Zeus banking virus is back warns security firm

Laptop

Botnets such as Zeus target those using online banking

Zeus, a virus that steals online banking details from infected computer users, is more powerful than ever, warns a web security company.

Trusteer says it has spotted the Trojan virus in one of every 3,000 of the 5.5m computers it monitors in the US and UK.

Zeus 1.6 can infect Windows machines using Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers, the company claims.

The malware steals login information by recording keystrokes when the infected user is on a list of target websites.

These websites are usually banks and other financial institutions.

The user's data is then sent to a remote server to be used and sold on by cyber-criminals.

"We expect this new version of Zeus to significantly increase fraud losses, since nearly 30% of internet users bank online with Firefox and the infection is growing faster than we have ever seen before," said Amit Klein, chief technology officer at Trusteer.

DIY virus

In March 2010, many parts of the command and control (C&C) system for the Zeus botnet were destroyed when the Kazakhstani ISP that was being used to administer it was cut off.

However, it does not take long for malware controllers to spring up elsewhere, and toolkits for assembling botnets are readily available on the black market.

"There are plenty of opportunities for people to purchase access to these systems through underground chat rooms," said Dr JD Marsters, from the department of electronics and computer science at the University of Southampton.

"It's a game of cat and mouse between anti-virus vendors and botnet developers."

Computer users should ensure that their anti-virus software and operating systems are kept up to date, he advised.

Katherine Jenkins finishes filming on Doctor Who Christmas special

Katherine Jenkins has revealed that she has finished filming her scenes for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special.

The award winning opera singer will star in the installment alongside Harry Potter star alongside Michael Gambon. According to Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, the episode is a "clever twist on the much loved A Christmas Carol".

Talking about the experience today, Katherine tweeted:

BTW, I've finished filming all my scenes for Dr Who now… Feel really sad as I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would! Lovely people!

As Doctor Who is filmed in Cardiff, Wales and Katherine's mum lives just forty miles away in Neath, the star took the opportunity to pop home for a quick visit too.

She wrote on Twitter:

Yes Dr Who is filmed in Wales, in and around the Cardiff/Newport area in this case. Managed to see a bit of my mum too – bonus!

Matt Smith auditioning for the role of watson in sherlock.

The actor, 27, was after the role of the detective's sidekick Doctor Watson - a part which eventually went to The Office's Martin Freeman.

Steven Moffat, who produced both Sherlock and Doctor Who, told The Sun that kooky Smith was more suited to the lead role of Holmes.

He said: "We'd already cast Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and the very first person we saw for Dr Watson was Matt, who came in and gave a very good audition."

"But he didn't have a chance in hell of getting it because he was clearly more of a Sherlock Holmes than a Dr Watson."

"There was also something a bit barmy about him - and you don't actually want that for Dr Watson. You want somebody a bit straighter."

"But he gave a very good account of himself and you could feel the effort in him clamping down on his barminess in order to do the audition."

Soon after Smith was cast as the 11th Time Lord in Doctor Who, replacing David Tennant in the iconic show.

Cumberbatch also revealed recently that he was offered the role as Doctor Who before Smith - but turned it down.

The 34-year-old actor said he was being considered to replace Tennant and said: 'David and I talked about it but I thought it would have to be radically different.'

'And anyway, I didn't really like the whole package – being on school lunch boxes.

Russell T Davies Talks Torchwood

"That is the benefit. You know, you have a completion to it. You have a whole. You have arcs that you know will complete. And some characters might die. Some characters will live. It gives it, you know, a proper beginning, middle, and end. And obviously we hope there will be further series of "Torchwood" after this, but it is worth pointing out that these ten episodes have one story which is answered within those ten episodes. It is a miniseries in that sense, that it comes to a very definite end. If there's a new version of "Torchwood" after that, we will have a brand-new story that can start again."

Doctor Who fans to get another 13 episodes in 2011

Dr Who - Matt Smith (Pic:BBC)

Doctor Who fans will be treated to another 13 episodes next year.

A spokesman confirmed the sixth series would be the same length as previous runs of the new version.

Steven Moffat, who took over from Russell T Davies as main writer and executive producer, says he will write five of the episodes plus the Christmas special for Matt Smith's second run as the Time Lord.

Moffat explained he had continued to follow the writing schedule of his former boss.

"Having worked out how Russell does it, I thought that's a perfect way of doing it," he said But he admitted he was struggling to balance his workload between Doctor Who and producing new BBC drama Sherlock.

"The last year has been extraordinary. I've had about four days off, and that includes Christmas day," he added.
