BFS Award for Doctor Who

At Nottingham's Britannia Hotel, Doctor Who was named best TV programme by the British Fantasy Society as part of FantasyCon over the weekend - and the award was received by none other than Dalek scriptwriter Rob Shearman.

Interestingly, the writer paid tribute to head writer Russell T. Davies and executive producer Julie Gardner, as well as adding that people had "laughed" at the idea of and his involvement in the resurrection of Doctor Who.

So another prestigious sci-fi award for the series - but what's this? Another?

Former Doctor Who producer Phil Collinson ws on hand at The Seoul International Drama Awards 2009 last week where the award for Favorite Foreign Drama of the Year (voted for online) was shared by CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and the 2008 run of Doctor Who!

"Thank you. It's a beautiful evening,'' Phil Collinson, the Head of Drama at the BBC, said in Korean during his acceptance speech for 'Doctor Who'.

"It's my pleasure to be here in Seoul, it's an amazing evening. It's an amazing honor and privilege to receive this award for 'Doctor Who'. It's even more special because it has been voted for by the viewers. Thank you so much,'' he said.

Great news - the series continues to grow around the world. Long may it continue!

Captain Jack Meets Doctor 11?

John Barrowman is interviewed in the print version of showbusiness publication The Stage this week - and their website has kindly printed a small portion of interest to fans of Doctor Who.

The full interview appears in the issue dated October 1st - in it, John Barrowman talks about Torchwood Series 4, future appearances for Captain Jack in Doctor Who and his planned appearances on US TV, which may or may not include Desperate Housewives.

Captain Jack Harkness as played by John BarrowmanSo onto the snippet posted on the magazine website, in which Barrowman recalls the occasion he met Matt Smith in the BBC Publicity department.

We sat down and talked for about 15 minutes and then he had to go off and do his thing. I turned to the publicist I work with at the BBC and I said, “I just feel like I’ve had an affair — I feel like I’ve just cheated on David behind his back!”

Then I told David and he was like, “You turncoat.” But Matt will be brilliant. Like anything, it’s different, it’s a new energy, he’s younger, he’ll bring a new twist to it.

Positive thoughts there - wouldn't it be good to see Jack line up with a new Doctor?

Torchwood: The Musical

Just to prove that Torchwood fans have stolent he mantel of "most bonkers fan", a group of them are auditioning for players in a Torchwood music, reports musicals and hotel site show-and-stay.co.uk.

Aiming to go into production in early 2010, the producers are attempting to succeed in presenting a professional standard play - however the cast will not be compensated so as to avoid breaching copyright law.

Apparently 10 characters are required, including Captain Jack Harness, Owen Harper and Ianto Jones; Captain Jack's character breakdown requires the successful actor to sing in the style of John Barrowman.

You might have trouble thinking something like this up - hopefully the script will do the show justice, and if anyone involved is reading, we'd love to hear from you via the Connect page, if only to get a clue as to the plot.

Presumably in this version, Ianto doesn't die.

Or at least get's a rousing singalong send off.

Village of the Daleks

North Yorkshire seaside village Mablethorpe was rather horribly described as the "Village of the Daleks" (due to the perceived number of mobility scooters) in a Guardian article earlier in the summer - and one local businessman has taken particular umbrage with this tasteless reference to Doctor Who's greatest enemies.

Local paper The Louth Leader has reported how local businessman and owner of Sharky's bar Richard Borthwick has launched a tongue in cheek fightback, utilising a remote controlled Dalek toy and some clever camera angles.

Mr Borthwick, 46, said: "They think that because older and disabled people use these that we should be referred to as the 'Village of the Daleks'- well these things are a lifeline for some of the people around here."

Quite a shoddy remark to make - in fact the Guardian scribe responsible should win a Hack of the Week award for that..
