THE SIGN OF THE SKULL
The Phantom (1943) is a 15 chapter serial Columbia Pictures, starring Tom Tyler in the title role. The series is based on Lee Falk comic strip, The Phantom. The series also features Jeanne Bates as the Phantom's girlfriend Diana Palmer, and Ace the Wonder Dog as faithful German Shepherd Phantom of the Devil (which is a wolf in the original comic). Professor Davidson is planning an expedition to find the lost city of Zoloz. The location of the city is contained in seven pieces of ivory, three of which Davidson already has. Medical Bremmer, however, intends to find the lost city and use it as a secret air base in his country without a name. To remove it as an obstacle, he kills the Phantom, only recently returned to his son, Geoffrey Prescott, to inherit the family's identity and assume the mantle of The Phantom. Three of the remaining pieces of ivory are owned by the Singapore Smith, who initially steals Davidson parts. The seventh and most important piece is missing at first, but becomes the possession of Tarter
