PRE-TITLES SCENE

[Taken from 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth: Flashpoint']

INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(The 1st Doctor [William Hartnell] is standing at the central console.)

1st DOCTOR: One day, I shall come back - yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.

TITLE SEQUENCE

'The Five Doctors'

'By Terrance Dicks'

1: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(The 5th Doctor walks around he console; dusting is as he goes, as Tegan enters via the interior door.)

TEGAN: Finished?
5th DOCTOR: Yes. Looks rather splendid, doesn't it?
TEGAN: But will the TARDIS run properly?
5th DOCTOR: Of course. Once everything's running.
TEGAN: Didn't you repair anything?
5th DOCTOR: (Hesitating) Well, the TARDIS is more than a machine, Tegan. It's like a person - it needs coaxing, persuading, encouraging.
TEGAN: You mean it's just as unreliable.
5th DOCTOR: You have little faith, Tegan.

(The 5th Doctor walks over to the side of the console nearest the outer door and activates the door control. He walks to the door, but it does not open.)

TEGAN: Can you blame me?

(The 5th Doctor casts Tegan a glare, then hits the console. The doors open and the 5th Doctor exits via them. Tegan laughs silently, then follows.)

2: EXT: THE EYE OF ORION, DAY

(Turlough sits on a rock and starts sketching the countryside laid out in front of him. The 5th Doctor approaches through the doorway of the ruins of a building. He stops to admire the view, then walks over and looks at Turlough's drawing. Then at the county side, back at Turlough's drawing and smiles approvingly. Tegan approaches through the same doorway.)

TURLOUGH: It's so marvellous here. I feel so calm and relaxed.
5th DOCTOR: It's the high bombardment of positive ions.
TEGAN: It's like Earth after a thunderstorm.
5th DOCTOR: Same cause and reason.
TEGAN: It's beautiful.
5th DOCTOR: For some, the Eye of Orion is the most tranquil place in the universe.
TEGAN: Can we stay here?
5th DOCTOR: Why not? For a while. We could do with a rest.

3: INT: GALLIFREY, A HIDDEN ROOM

(The gloved hand of an unknown person manipulates the bank of controls in front of him. On the screen appears the 1st Doctor [Richard Hurndall], taking a stroll in some gardens. The man operates more switches.)

4: EXT, GARDENS, DAY

(The 1st Doctor looks up and sees a twisting, turning black triangle flying towards him. He tries to run, but cannot move quickly and before he has got far, the triangle is upon him. He disappears from the garden and as the triangle flies off, we see that the 1st Doctor is trapped inside it.)

5: EXT, EYE OF ORION, DAY

(The 5th Doctor suddenly feels a sharp pain by his left heart.)

TURLOUGH: Are you all right?
5th DOCTOR: (Breathing fairly heavily) Just a twinge of cosmic angst.
TEGAN: Cosmic?
5th DOCTOR: As if I'd lost something.

6: INT: GALLIFREY, HIDDEN ROOM

(A small model of the 1st Doctor appears in front of a screen. The gloved hand picks it up and places it on a pentagonal-shaped arrangement, which has a model tower in the middle. The segment of the board containing the 1st Doctor lights up.)

7: EXT: LONG SHOT, UNIT HQ

(A sign in the foreground reads:)

'MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

U.N.I.T. HEADQUARTERS

KEEP OUT'

8: INT: UNIT HQ, PRESUMABLY COLONEL CRICHTON'S OFFICE

(Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart is sitting on the edge of a desk; Colonel Crichton is standing to his left. They each have a glass of drink - whisky, brandy, or some such.)

BRIGADIER: You know, I can't tell you how much I was looking forward to this reunion - a chance of re-meeting old friends.
CRICHTON: There was one chap we tried to get hold of - what was his name? Used to be your scientific advisor…?
BRIGADIER: Oh, the Doctor.
CRICHTON: Yes that's right.
BRIGADIER: Wonderful chap. All of them.
CRICHTON: Them...?

(He is interrupted by a beep on the intercom. He walks over to the table and answers it.)

CRICHTON: Yes?
SERGEANT: (oov) Excuse me, sir, sorry to interrupt - someone's arrived.
CRICHTON: I'm not expecting anyone.

9: INT: A SMALL OFFICE, OUTSIDE THAT OF PREVIOUS SCENE

(The Sergeant is sitting at a desk. The 2nd Doctor - who cannot as yet be seen, bar his fur coat - is standing in the foreground.)

SERGEANT: Insists on seeing Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
CRICHTON: (oov) How did he know he was here?

(The 2nd Doctor makes for the door. The Sergeant stands up to block his path.)

SERGEANT: I'm sorry, sir, you're not allowed in there.
2nd DOCTOR: Not allowed? Me? I'm allowed everywhere.

10: INT: UNIT HQ, PRESUMABLY COLONEL CRICHTON'S OFFICE

(The Brigadier stands and turns as the 2nd Doctor, opens the door and enters the room. The Sergeant tries to stop him, but only succeeds in removing his fur coat.)

2nd DOCTOR: (to the Sergeant) Oh, thank you.

(He goes to shake the Brigadier by the hand.)

2nd DOCTOR: Brigadier.
BRIGADIER: Good heavens, is it…you?
2nd DOCTOR: Yes, yes. For once, I was able to steer the TARDIS - and here I am.
CRICHTON: (to the Sergeant) Oh, it's all right, Sergeant.
SERGEANT: Very good, sir.
2nd DOCTOR: I'm not too late, am I?
BRIGADIER: What for?
2nd DOCTOR: For your speech as guest of honour.
BRIGADIER: How did you know?
2nd DOCTOR: I saw it in the Times.
CRICHTON: That's impossible - the reporter's still here.
2nd DOCTOR: Tomorrow's Times.

(He walks over to Crichton.)

2nd DOCTOR: And, er…and who is this?
BRIGADIER: That's my replacement, Colonel Crichton.
2nd DOCTOR: Ah.

(He shakes Crichton's hand.)

2nd DOCTOR: Yes, mine was pretty unpromising, too.
BRIGADIER: Er, come along, Doctor - let's take a stroll around the grounds. (To Crichton) Awfully sorry about this - do excuse me for a moment.
2nd DOCTOR: You've had this place redecorated, haven't you? Hum. Don't like it.
BRIGADIER: Come along, Doctor.

(The 2nd Doctor and the Brigadier head toward the glass doors at the rear of the room.)

2nd DOCTOR: After you.
BRIGADIER: What?
2nd DOCTOR: After you.
BRIGADIER: Oh.

(He leads the way out of the room. Crichton, slightly confused, walks around the desk and picks up the bottle and both glasses.)

11: EXT: OUTSIDE UNIT HQ

(The Brigadier helps the 2nd Doctor to put on his fur coat.)

12: INT: UNIT HQ, PRESUMABLY COLONEL CRICHTON'S OFFICE

(Crichton is screwing on the cap to the bottle.)

SERGEANT: Is everything all right, sir?
CRICHTON: What the blazes is going on? Who was that strange little man?
SERGEANT: The Doctor.
CRICHTON: Who?

13: EXT: UNIT HQ GROUNDS

BRIGADIER: Yes…Yeti, Cybermen - we've seen some times, Doctor.
2nd DOCTOR: And Omega - don't forget Omega.
BRIGADIER: As if I could!
2nd DOCTOR: And the terrible Zodin.
BRIGADIER: Who?
2nd DOCTOR: Oh, you weren't concerned with her, were you? She happened in the future…[???]…They used to hop like kangaroos. Well, I must say goodbye, Brigadier. I really shouldn't be here at all. I'm not exactly breaking the laws of time, but I am bending them a little.
BRIGADIER: You never did bother much about rules, as I remember.

(The 2nd Doctor looks up and sees a black triangle, as before, descending towards them.)

BRIGADIER: What's the matter? (Seeing the black triangle) What is it?
2nd DOCTOR: Brigadier, I think our past is catching up on us. Or maybe it's our future. Come on, run!

(They start to run.)

BRIGADIER: Doctor, I'm too old for his sort of thing.
2nd DOCTOR: Where's it gone? We must get back to the TARDIS before it's too late.

(He turns round and sees the triangle approaching.)

2nd DOCTOR: Run!

(They run, but the triangle catches up with and captures them, before spinning off.)

14: EXT: THE EYE OF ORION

5th DOCTOR: Great chunks of my past, detaching themselves like melting icebergs.

(He clutches his chest as a sharp pain hits him.)

TEGAN: (To Turlough) Do something - help him!
5th DOCTOR: Oh no, no, don't look so worried - I'll have it all worked out soon. Everything's all right. Everything's quite all right.

(The 5th Doctor collapses, but Tegan and Turlough catch him.)

15: INT: GALLIFREY, HIDDEN ROOM

(The gloved hand removes models of the Brigadier and the 2nd Doctor from the scanner and places them on the board.)

16: EXT: A COUNTRY LANE

(The 3rd Doctor is driving Bessie along the road when he notices the triangle, as before, in front of him.)

3rd DOCTOR: Great balls of fire!

(He swerves, turns the car around and drives back down the road. He can still see the triangle in his wing-mirror, but after a short while, when he looks again, it is gone.)

3rd DOCTOR: Good old Bessie.

(As the 3rd Doctor drives off, the triangle flies down from behind and captures both the 3rd Doctor and Bessie.)

17: EXT: EYE OF ORION

5th DOCTOR: I am being diminished - whittled away, piece by piece. A man is the sum of his memories, you know - a Time Lord even more so.
TEGAN: What can we do to help you?
5th DOCTOR: Get me into the TARDIS.

(Tegan and Turlough carry the 5th Doctor back towards the TARDIS. As they near the ship, the Doctor lets out a slight gasp as he feels another sharp pain in his chest.)

5th DOCTOR: Ah! I have to find…to find…
TURLOUGH: Find what?
5th DOCTOR: My other selves.

18: INT: GALLIFREY - HIDDEN ROOM

(A model of the 3rd Doctor is placed on the board by the same gloved hand.)

19: EXT: OUTSIDE SARAH'S HOUSE

(Sarah-Jane Smith leaves the house and makes for the gate. As she does so, K9 approaches.)

K9: Mistress - do not go out.
SARAH-JANE: What is it?
K9: Danger, mistress.
SARAH-JANE: What?
K9: I can sense danger, mistress. Telepathic trace faint but rapidly increasing in strength. Do not go out.
SARAH-JANE: What kind of danger?
K9: Positive data not yet available.
SARAH-JANE: Well, I can't stay home - you have to give me a reason.
K9: Negative, mistress. Data analysis shows too many variables. Danger readings now becoming much higher, mistress. Suggestion: take me with you.
SARAH-JANE: (Laughing) I can't. Honestly, I can't. The car's in docks so I've got to go by bus.
K9: There is danger, mistress. My sensors indicate it is now extreme. And, the Doctor is involved.
SARAH-JANE: Well, now I know you're imagining things. See you later.

(She opens the gate and leaves.)

K9: Danger! Doctor! Danger! Mistress!

(The camera pans to a sign on the gate that reads: Beware of the Dog.)

20: EXT: CAMBRIDGE, THE RIVER CAM

[This scene taken from episode one of 'Shada']

(The 4th Doctor and the second Romana are enjoying a ride in a punt.)

ROMANA: Isn't it wonderful how something so primitive can be so…
4th DOCTOR: Restful?
ROMANA: No, simple. You just push in one direction and the boat goes in the other. Oh, I do love the spring - all the leaves, colours.
4th DOCTOR: It's October.
ROMANA: I thought you said we were coming here for May week.
4th DOCTOR: I did. May week's in June.
ROMANA: I'm confused.
4th DOCTOR: So's the TARDIS. [???]
ROMANA: Oh, I do love the autumn. All the leaves, colours.
4th DOCTOR: Yes. Well, at least with something as simple as a punt nothing can go wrong. No co-ordinates, no dimensional stabilizers, nothing. Just the water, the punt, a strong pair of hands and a pole.

(As he says this, the pole becomes stuck in the riverbed and slips out of his hands. As he is about to fall into the water, the black triangle spins into view and captures the 4th Doctor, Romana and, seemingly, the punt.)

21: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(The 5th Doctor, at the controls, suddenly feels dizzy again. Turlough catches him as he collapses and lowers him to the ground.)

TEGAN: Oh no!

22: INT: GALLIFREY, HIDDEN ROOM

(A picture of the 4th Doctor and Romana appears on the screen; it is an unstable picture, however. The gloved hand operates the controls, then hits them, annoyed.)

23: EXT: A BUS STOP ON A COUNTRY LANE

(Having run to get to the bus stop, Sarah-Jane looks up and sees the black triangle. She tries to run away, but does not get far before it captures her.)

24: INT: GALLIFREY, HIDDEN ROOM

(The gloved hand places a small model of Sarah-Jane on the section of the board containing the 3rd Doctor.)

25: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(Turlough examines the 5th Doctor. He feels for the Doctor's pulse and looks at Tegan questioningly.)

TEGAN: Two hearts.
TURLOUGH: Well, his body seems all right. He just seems to be fading away. Why did he have to set the TARDIS moving? We were safe before he did that.
TEGAN: Look!

(The 5th Doctor fades from sight.)

TEGAN: Doctor?!

(The 5th Doctor fades back into view. The central column of the console stops moving.)

TEGAN: What's going on?
TURLOUGH: We've landed.

(Turlough operates a switch and switches on the scanner, which shows a mist-swept, rocky area, with a tower in the background.)

26: INT: GALLIFREY, HIDDEN ROOM

(The gloved hand places Turlough, Tegan and the 5th Doctor on the board.)

27: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

TURLOUGH: According to the instruments, we're nowhere, in no time.
TEGAN: The Doctor must have forgotten to reconnect something.
TURLOUGH: No.

(He walks around the console and pushes a switch, which makes the scanner screen close.)

TURLOUGH: The instruments are all working perfectly; they just won't tell us anything. The TARDIS is…paralyzed.
TEGAN: How did we get here? And what do we do now?
TURLOUGH: We wait…until the Doctor recovers.

28: INT: GALLIFREY, A MEETING CHAMBER

(President Borusa enters the room and sits at a table, around which the Castellan and Chancellor Flavia are already seated.)

BORUSA: Well?
CASTELLAN: He has arrived.
BORUSA: Involving this person does not please me.
CASTELLAN: The constitution clearly states that when, in emergency session, the members of the inner council are unanimous…
FLAVIA: …Which, indeed, we are…
BORUSA: …The President of the Council may be overruled. What a ridiculous clause. Very well - have him enter.
CASTELLAN: With all due respect, Lord President, your regeneration has not helped your stubbornness.

(The door opens and the Master enters.)

MASTER: Lord President, Castellan, Chancellor Flavia.

(He bows in Flavia' direction.)

MASTER: This is a very great and, may I say, a most unexpected honour.

(He sits at the table.)

MASTER: I may be seated? Now, then, what can I do for you?
BORUSA: You are one of the most evil and corrupt beings this Time Lord race has ever produced. Your crimes are without number and your villainy without end. Nevertheless, we are prepared to offer you a full and free pardon.
MASTER: What makes you think I want your forgiveness?
CASTELLAN: We can offer you an alternative to your renegade existence.
BORUSA: Regeneration. A complete new life cycle.
MASTER: What must I do?
BORUSA: Rescue the Doctor.
MASTER: (Amazed) What?

29: INT: GALLIFREY, THE DEATH ZONE, A CORRIDOR

(The 1st Doctor is wandering along the passageway. There is the sound of thunder. He spots a shadow.)

1st DOCTOR: Susan…surely it's Susan…
SUSAN: Grandfather? Oh, Grandfather! Thank goodness I've found you. How did you get here? What's happening?
1st DOCTOR: I wish I knew, my dear.
SUSAN: As soon as I found myself in this horrible place I started looking for you. Somehow I knew I'd find you here.
1st DOCTOR: Well, the important question now is where are we - and why?

(They spot the shadow of a Dalek coming towards them from around the corner.)

SUSAN: We must be on Skaro.
1st DOCTOR: We were brought here. Perhaps the Dalek was, too.

(The Dalek spots them.)

SUSAN: Run, Grandfather!

(They start to run away from the Dalek.)

DALEK: Halt, at once. Halt - or you will be exterminated. It is the Doctor. The Doctor must be destroyed.

(The Dalek begins to fire.)

DALEK: Exterminate. Exterminate. Exterminate!

30: INT: GALLIFREY, THE COUNCIL CHAMBER

(An image of the Death Zone appears on the monitor.)

BORUSA: The Death Zone.
MASTER: Ah - the dark secret at the heart of your Time Lord paradise.
CASTELLAN: Recently, the Zone has become reactivated. Somehow, it is draining energy from the Eye of Harmony.
FLAVIA: To an extent that endangers all Gallifrey.
BORUSA: We must know what is happening there.
MASTER: Did it occur to you to go and look?
BORUSA: Two of the High Council went into the Zone - neither returned.
MASTER: So you sent for the Doctor?
CASTELLAN: We looked for the Doctor, but he no longer exists - not in any of his regenerations.
BORUSA: The Doctor has been taken out of time.

(The wobbly image of the 4th Doctor and Romana appears on the screen.)

CASTELLAN: We believe the attempt to lift him from his time stream was unsuccessful. There he must stay until we can find and free his other selves.
MASTER: And if you cannot? The cosmos without the Doctor scarcely bares thinking about. What makes you think his other selves are in the Zone?
BORUSA: Their time traces. They converge there.
MASTER: And you can get me into the Zone?
CASTELLAN: We have a power-boosted, open-ended transmat beam.
MASTER: Ah. Why me?
BORUSA: Because we need someone determined, experienced, ruthless, cunning…
MASTER: And disposable?
CASTELLAN: Not at all. You would be useless to us dead.
FLAVIA: Will you go?
BORUSA: Will you?
MASTER: And rescue the Doctor…

(The Master laughs.)

31: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(The Doctor has faded from view again.)

TEGAN: Come on, Doctor.
TURLOUGH: Hold on!

(The Doctor reappears.)

TEGAN: What's happening to you?
5th DOCTOR: I'm being sucked into a time vortex…Part of me there already…it's pulling the rest. I must send a signal.
TEGAN: What signal?
5th DOCTOR: My centre signal…find them…I must be whole.

32: INT: THE DARK ZONE, A CORRIDOR

(The 1st Doctor and Susan are still running, pursued by the Dalek.)

DALEK: Obey. Obey the Daleks. You will be exterminated. Exterminate! Exterminate!
SUSAN: Oh, It's a dead end!
1st DOCTOR: That may be precisely what we need.
SUSAN: Oh, grandfather, come on, please!
1st DOCTOR: No, no, no, don't argue, Susan. Listen to me. Now, when I say now, help me to push the Dalek down that alley and when I say drop, drop. Understood?

(Susan nods. The Dalek approaches, unable to see its prey.)

1st DOCTOR: Now!

(They push the Dalek into the alley.)

DALEK: Under attack!
1st DOCTOR: Drop!

(They drop to the ground. The dalek starts firing wildly. The shots bounce off the mirror-plated walls.)

DALEK: Exterminate! Under attack! Exterminate! Exterminate!

(A shot rebounds off one of the walls and destroys the Dalek, taking a section of the wall with it. Susan helps the 1st Doctor off the floor.)

1st DOCTOR: It's very dangerous to fire energy weapons in an enclosed space.
SUSAN: Look!

(Through the now-missing wall, they are able to see the Dark Tower.)

1st DOCTOR: The Dark Tower.
SUSAN: We're on Gallifrey!
1st DOCTOR: The Death Zone.
SUSAN: Why were we brought here?
1st DOCTOR: Instinct, my dear, tells me that the answer to that lies in the Tower.

33: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE

(The Brigadier and the 2nd Doctor are walking in a foggy slate like area.)

BRIGADIER: Charming spot, Doctor.
2nd DOCTOR: My dear Brigadier, it's no use blaming me.
BRIGADIER: You attract trouble, Doctor - you always did. Where the devil are we?
2nd DOCTOR: I'm not sure. But I have some very nasty suspicions. What's that?
BRIGADIER: Huh?
2nd DOCTOR: Over there.

(He points to what appears to be a figure, shrouded in fog. The Brigadier goes to investigate, but the 2nd Doctor stops him.)

2nd DOCTOR: Get down.

(They crouch down beside the ruins of a wall. A silver arm reaches through a hole in the wall and grabs hold of the Brigadier's arm. He lets out a cry of pain. The 2nd Doctor tries to pull him away, but is unsuccessful. The Brigadier continues to shriek in agony.)

2nd DOCTOR: Don't worry, Brigadier.

(The 2nd Doctor picks up a bar and hits the silver arm repeatedly until it relinquishes its grip on the Brigadier.)

2nd DOCTOR: Run!

34: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, A ROAD ON A HILL

(The 3rd Doctor, driving Bessie, stops his car to look ahead at the foggy road.)

3rd DOCTOR: Now what?

(Sarah-Jane stumbles through the thick fog ahead of the 3rd Doctor and, unable to see her way, she falls down a slope, letting out a scream.)

SARAH-JANE: Oh…oh…oh, K9, why didn't I listen to you?
3rd DOCTOR: Hang on a minute.

(The 3rd Doctor attaches a piece of rope to the front of Bessie, then throws the other end down to Sarah.)

3rd DOCTOR: Catch hold of this.

(As Sarah-Jane ties the rope around her, the 3rd Doctor gets into Bessie and reverses the car, pulling Sarah-Jane up to the road.)

SARAH-JANE: Oh! I never thought I'd be so pleased to see anyone.
3rd DOCTOR: I think we should come away from the ledge, don't you?
SARAH-JANE: Wait a moment…it's you.
3rd DOCTOR: Well, of course it's me. Hello, Sarah-Jane.
SARAH-JANE: No, but...it's you you.
3rd DOCTOR: That's right.
SARAH-JANE: No no, you changed remember? You became all…er, erm…
3rd DOCTOR: Teeth and curls?
SARAH-JANE: Yes.
3rd DOCTOR: Yes, well, maybe I did, but I haven't yet.
SARAH-JANE: Oh, I see. No I don't. Never mind. Yes. Well. Thank you very much for rescuing me, Doctor, and now perhaps you'll explain why I'm here to need rescuing.
3rd DOCTOR: Steady on, Sarah-Jane, I'm not exactly here by choice either, you know.
SARAH-JANE: Then, what are we doing here?
3rd DOCTOR: Well, I'll try and explain. Come on. Get in the car.

(The 3rd Doctor gathers up the rope as they head toward Bessie.)

35: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, NEAR THE TARDIS

1st DOCTOR: It's no good - I shall have to rest.
SUSAN: Oh, yes, of course, grandfather. I'll just go and take another look.
1st DOCTOR: Yes, yes.

(Susan walks ahead and spots the TARDIS.)

SUSAN: Look! Come and see.
1st DOCTOR: Hmm, what? Goodness me! The TARDIS!
SUSAN: What's it doing here?
1st DOCTOR: I suggest we go and find out.

36: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

TEGAN: He's only just about conscious.
TURLOUGH: If only he'd managed to send that signal.

(The 1st Doctor and Susan walk in. Susan closes the doors.)

TEGAN: Who are you?
1st DOCTOR: More to the point, what are you young people doing inside my TARDIS?
TEGAN: It's his TARDIS.
1st DOCTOR: And who might he be?
TURLOUGH: The Doctor.
1st DOCTOR: Hum? Good grief!

(The 5th Doctor looks up and sees the 1st Doctor.)

5th DOCTOR: You're here. You're here.
1st DOCTOR: Yes, evidently. Now, take it steadily, my boy - and let me help you up.
5th DOCTOR: I tried to send a recall signal.
1st DOCTOR: Yes, it doesn't matter. How do you come to be here?
5th DOCTOR: Well, the TARDIS was, er…I don't know.
1st DOCTOR: Never mind that.
SUSAN: Is he really…?
1st DOCTOR: Me? Yes. Yes, I'm afraid so. Regeneration?
5th DOCTOR: Fourth.
1st DOCTOR: Goodness me! So, there are five of me now! Oh, ah... this is Susan.
5th DOCTOR: Yes, I know.
1st DOCTOR: And, er, you two are, er…
TURLOUGH: Turlough.
TEGAN: And I'm Tegan Jovanka. Who might you me?
1st DOCTOR: I might be any number of things, young lady. As it happens, I am the Doctor. The original, you might say.
TEGAN: But you shouldn't be here at the same time, with him, should you?
1st DOCTOR: Certainly not.
5th DOCTOR: It only happens in the gravest emergencies.
1st DOCTOR: Like now.
5th DOCTOR: Yes, unfortunately.
1st DOCTOR: Now look, young lady. Make yourself useful. This young fellow looks as though he needs some refreshment and I know that Susan and I do, too.
TEGAN: Hang on a minute.
5th DOCTOR: Tegan, Tegan, Tegan, er…humour him. You know, I sometimes used to get a little tetchy. Fortunately one mellows with age. Turlough will help.

(Tegan makes for the inner door.)

TURLOUGH: (To the Doctor) Thank you…

(He follows Tegan.)

37: INT: GALLIFREY, A COUNCIL CHAMBER

(Flavia takes a Seal from Borusa.)

FLAVIA: The Seal of the High Council. It may help to convince the Doctors of your good faith.
MASTER: Perhaps.
CASTELLAN: It's time to go. When you have something to tell us, activate this.

(He hands the Master the recall device.)

CASTELLAN: We will pick up your signal and transmat you back.
MASTER: Isn't anyone going to wish me luck?
BORUSA: We wish you success, for all our sakes.

(The Castellan operates the transmat device and the Master disappears.)

CASTELLAN: And now, we wait.

38: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, NEAR A SMALL ROAD

(The 2nd Doctor and the Brigadier spot the Tower in the distance.)

2nd DOCTOR: It's just as I feared: we're on Gallifrey, in the Death Zone.
BRIGADIER: You know this place?
2nd DOCTOR: To my shame. Yes, mine Brigadier - and that of every other Time Lord. In the days before Rassilon, my ancestors had tremendous powers, which they misused disgracefully. They set up this place - the Death Zone - and walled it around with an impenetrable force field. And then, they kidnapped other beings and set them down here.
BRIGADIER: But what for?
2nd DOCTOR: I'll explain as we go.
BRIGADIER: Where are we going?
2nd DOCTOR: To the Tower. To Rassilon, the greatest single figure in Time Lord history.
BRIGADIER: Is that where he lives?
2nd DOCTOR: Not exactly, Brigadier - it's his tomb.

39: EXT: ANOTHER PART OF THE DEATH ZONE

(The Master discovers the remains of a body.)

MASTER: One of my predecessors.

(A laser bolt fires from above and lands very close to him.)

MASTER: Not the most hospitable of environments.

40: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

1st DOCTOR: You're talking nonsense, my boy. We must send the signal as planned and wait for the others.
5th DOCTOR: No, there's no time. We must leave immediately. Temporal instability's already affecting me.
1st DOCTOR: And without our other selves, we'll be of little use out there.
5th DOCTOR: Well, they'll never make it. There is evil at work?
TEGAN: Evil?
1st & 5th DOCTORS: (Together) Hmm?
1st DOCTOR: We're in the Death Zone on Gallifrey.
TURLOUGH: How can you be so sure?
5th DOCTOR: Well, the Tomb of Rassilon. Look, can we really afford to wait, especially if someone is tapping his power?
1st DOCTOR: Well, what do you intend to do, young man?
5th DOCTOR: Well, I shall go to the Tower.
1st DOCTOR: But there could be great danger.
5th DOCTOR: Help me set up the computer scanner. We can at least see what is out there.

(The 1st Doctor grunts his approval.)

41: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, A ROAD

(The 3rd Doctor and Sarah-Jane are in Bessie driving down a road.)

3rd DOCTOR: All this was the setting for the games. But old Rassilon put a stop to it in the end. He sealed off the entire Zone and forbade the use of the Time Scoop. Until now.
SARAH-JANE: But why don't they just tell us why we're here?
3rd DOCTOR: Because they delight in deviousness, that's why. It amuses them: chucking us in the deep end watching us sink or swim.

(The 3rd Doctor stops the car.)

SARAH-JANE: Why have we stopped?
3rd DOCTOR: So I can get my bearings. Aha - there it is.
SARAH-JANE: What?
3rd DOCTOR: The Tomb of Rassilon - that's where we're going.

(They set off again.)

SARAH-JANE: Look, do you think this is wise, Doctor? I mean, well, whatever's in that Tower, it's got enormous powers and…well, what can we do against it?
3rd DOCTOR: What I've always done, Sarah-Jane - improvise.

(As they drive along, the Master steps out from behind a rock.)

MASTER: Doctor, wait!

(The car screeches to a halt.)

SARAH-JANE: Who's that?
3rd DOCTOR: I don't know. No, it couldn't be…

(He reverses the car to where the Master is standing.)

3rd DOCTOR: Jehosophat, it really is you. Yes, well, I should have known you'd be behind all this.
SARAH-JANE: Doctor, who is it?
3rd DOCTOR: That's my best enemy. He likes to be known as the Master, don't you? My, my, my, but you've changed. Another regeneration?
MASTER: Not exactly.
3rd DOCTOR: I take it you are responsible for our being in the Death Zone?
MASTER: For once, I'm innocent - here at the High Council's request, to help you and your other selves.
3rd DOCTOR: You? Sent here by the Time Lords to help me? I've never heard such arrant nonsense.
MASTER: I happen to be telling the truth. I carry the Seal of the High Council.
3rd DOCTOR: Forged, no doubt.
MASTER: See for yourself.
3rd DOCTOR: Stolen, then. I'll return it at the first opportunity.
MASTER: If you would only listen, I'm here to help.
3rd DOCTOR: You? Help me? Rubbish. This is some kind of a trap.
MASTER: I knew this was going to be difficult, but I didn't realize that even you would be so stupid as to make it impossible.

(A thunderbolt hits the ground right next to the Master.)

3rd DOCTOR: I knew it: a trap.
MASTER: These thunderbolts are everywhere…
SARAH-JANE: No, we can't leave him.
3rd DOCTOR: You just watch me.

(They drive off as the Master runs away. There are thunderbolts coming down all around.)

42: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(A graphical representation of the tower is being displayed on a screen on the console.)

5th DOCTOR: Now, as far as I can make out, there are three entrances: one above, one below, and the main door, here.

(He points to the screen.)

1st DOCTOR: Which do you plan to use?
5th DOCTOR: Er…well, the main door.
1st DOCTOR: I still think you should wait.
5th DOCTOR: There may be very little time.

43: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, A ROAD

(The 3rd Doctor and Sarah-Jane walk away from Bessie, from which a lot of smoke is pouring.)

3rd DOCTOR: See what I mean? A trap.

44: INT: GALLIFREY, A COUNCIL CHAMBER

(A distorted image of the 4th Doctor is displayed on a screen.)

BORUSA: Is there nothing you can do to retrieve him?
TECHNICIAN: Nothing, my Lord President. With the present energy drain, it is beyond our resources.
BORUSA: You use what spare energy you have to stabilize that portion of the vortex in which he is trapped. It may at least give the remaining Doctors more time.
TECHNICIAN: Lord President.

(The technician leaves as the Castellan enters.)

CASTELLAN: No news from the Master?
BORUSA: Did you really think that there would be?

45: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, OPEN MOORLAND

2nd DOCTOR: I wonder…could Rassilon himself have brought us here?
BRIGADIER: Now hang on a minute, Doctor. You said this chap Rassilon was dead. You did say that was his tomb?

(He Points to the tower.)

2nd DOCTOR: Oh yes, but no one really knows how extensive his powers were.
BRIGADIER: You mean he could still be alive?
2nd DOCTOR: Watching us at this very moment.
BRIGADIER: Didn't you say he was supposed to be rather a good type?
2nd DOCTOR: So the official history says. But there are many rumours and legends to the contrary. Some say his fellow Time Lords rebelled against his cruelty and locked him in the Tower in eternal sleep.
BRIGADIER: And now he's woken up again?
2nd DOCTOR: Well, it would explain a great deal. Oh dear…
BRIGADIER: Hmm?
2nd DOCTOR: We could be playing the Game of Rassilon at this very moment.
BRIGADIER: Your tone doesn't inspire much confidence - I assume we're not expected to win?
2nd DOCTOR: Come on.

(They start walking toward the tower.)

46: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(The 5th Doctor is punching buttons on the console.)

TURLOUGH: Even if you rea…

(The 5th Doctor holds up his hand to stop Turlough from talking.)

5th DOCTOR: Ah!
TURLOUGH: Even if you reach this Tower, what are you going to do?
5th DOCTOR: Er, release the TARDIS - the computer scanner's located the force field generator.
SUSAN: I'll come with you.
5th DOCTOR: Hmm.
TEGAN: I'd like to come, too.
1st DOCTOR: No. I think it would be safer if you were to remain here with me.
TEGAN: I'd like to go with him
5th DOCTOR: Ah…yes, yes, all right. Ah, now, you'll, ah, you'll bring the TARDIS to the Tower as soon as I switch off the force field.
1st DOCTOR: Of course.
5th DOCTOR: Yes, of course. Right, better get started - time's running out.

(He operates the door control and the door opens.)

5th DOCTOR: Eureka!

47: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, A WOODY AREA

SARAH-JANE: I thought we were going to the Tower.
3rd DOCTOR: We are.
SARAH-JANE: Then why this way?
3rd DOCTOR: Because the mountains are between us and the tower, Sarah. That's why.
SARAH-JANE: Can't find an easier way?
3rd DOCTOR: No, it'd take far too long.

(They notice a patrol of Cybermen not too far away.)

3rd DOCTOR: So, the Master has used the Time Scoop to bring others as well as us here. Come on; let's get out of here.

48: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

TURLOUGH: Do you think it will take the Doctor long to reach the Tower?
1st DOCTOR: It depends on what may try to stop him, my boy. Oh, it's not without reason that it's called the Death Zone.

(The console begins to beep.)

1st DOCTOR: Great heavens! Two more traces.
TURLOUGH: Time Lords?
1st DOCTOR: Two more Doctors. The scanner is keyed to my…to our brain patterns. Well, well, well, so two of them made it. I wonder what happened to the other.

49: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, THE LOWER ENTRANCE TO THE TOWER

(The 2nd Doctor and Brigadier are climbing up to a cave entrance.)

2nd DOCTOR: …to Rassilon's Tower we go, must choose below…no, no, no…one to Rassilon's Tower will go, Must choose above, between, below.
BRIGADIER: Are you in pain, Doctor?
2nd DOCTOR: Age has not mellowed you, has it, Brigadier? I was recalling, in point of fact, an old nursery rhyme about the Dark Tower.
BRIGADIER: Does it help?
2nd DOCTOR: Considerably more than you do. It describes the different ways to enter the Tower.
BRIGADIER: A nursery rhyme? I've never heard anything so ridiculous.
2nd DOCTOR: Nevertheless, I propose to put it to the test. Come along. In here.

(They enter the cave. The 2nd Doctor lights a torch, which is hanging next to the entrance of the cave and takes in with him.)

50: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, ROCKY MOORLAND

5th DOCTOR: Soon be there.
SUSAN: I'm finding this quite exhilarating.
TEGAN: Wish I were.

(The Master is standing some distance from where they are travelling.)

MASTER: Doctor!
TEGAN: The Master.
5th DOCTOR: Wait here.

(He walks over to the Master.)

MASTER: I know this is going to be hard to believe, Doctor, but for once, I mean you no harm.
5th DOCTOR: Like Alice, I try to believe three impossible things before breakfast. Go on.
MASTER: I've been sent here by the High Council to help you.

(The Cyber Lieutenant spots the 5th Doctor and the Master.)

LIEUTENANT: Aah!
SUSAN: Is this man a friend of the Doctor's?
TEGAN: Anything but.
SUSAN: Well, they're talking as if they were friends.
TEGAN: That's what worries me.

51: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, BEHIND A ROCK

LIEUTENANT: I have found the ones from the TARDIS.
LEADER: Excellent.
LIEUTENANT: I shall take the patrol and destroy them.
LEADER: No! Capture them alive. They must be interrogated first.
LIEUTENANT: Leader.
LEADER: We also need the Time Lord to pilot the TARDIS. Go.
LIEUTENANT: (to other Cybermen) Here are your orders…

52: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, ROCKY MOORLAND

MASTER: Be reasonable, Doctor.
5th DOCTOR: I am. I listened.
MASTER: As you see, I'm armed. I could easily kill you if I wanted to.
5th DOCTOR: And not humiliate me first? Ooh, that isn't your style at all.
MASTER: I also have a recall device that'll take me back to the conference room in the heart of the Capitol.
5th DOCTOR: So you say. I would prefer more positive proof of your credentials.
MASTER: One of your other selves took it from me.
5th DOCTOR: Do you expect me to believe the fantastic tale you've just told?

(Tegan spots the Cybermen advancing on the 5th Doctor and the Master.)

TEGAN: Doctor, look out - Cybermen!
5th DOCTOR: Go back!
SUSAN: Well, we can't just leave him!
TEGAN: We can't help him, either. Do as he says. We must warn the others.

(They run away.)

5th DOCTOR: After you.

(The Master runs, with the 5th Doctor quickly following.)

LIEUTENANT: Halt, or you will be destroyed.

(A Cyberman fires a shot, which hits the ground, sending pieces of rock flying. One of these hits the Master and knocks him out. The 5th Doctor examines his fallen enemy.)

5th DOCTOR: Zapped.

(As the Cybermen advance, the 5th Doctor takes the recall device from the Master.)

LIEUTENANT: You will accompany us.
5th DOCTOR: Sorry - must dash.

(The 5th Doctor presses the button on the device and disappears.)

53: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, MOORLAND

TEGAN: Susan, come on!

(Susan trips on the ground and falls.)

TEGAN: Can you walk?
SUSAN: Ooh, just about.

54: INT: GALLIFREY, A COUNCIL CHAMBER

(The Doctor appears in the transmat area, to be greeted by the Castellan and Borusa.)

5th DOCTOR: Quite a reception committee.

55: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, ROCKY MOORLAND

(The Master wakens and notices the recall device is gone. The Cybermen are standing nearby.)

LIEUTENANT: This is not the Doctor.

(The Master stands.)

LEADER: Take him.
MASTER: I…I've been looking for you.
LEADER: Kill him!
MASTER: I'm here as your friend.
LEADER: Who are you?
MASTER: I am the Master - and your loyal servant.

56: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

SUSAN: Then he just…disappeared.
1st DOCTOR: Hum.
TURLOUGH: What could have happened?
1st DOCTOR: Well, from the way Susan described it, a transmat device.
TEGAN: Yes, and he must have got it from the Master.
SUSAN: I do hope he's all right.
1st DOCTOR: Well, with our young friend gone, I shall have to go to the Dark Tower.
TEGAN: I'll come with you.
1st DOCTOR: Oh. Oh, well, if you must.

57: INT: GALLIFREY, A COUNCIL CHAMBER

5th DOCTOR: It seems I've done the Master an injustice.
BORUSA: If he survived, I'm sure he will learn to live with the misjudgement.
5th DOCTOR: Well, this changes things. If the Master isn't responsible, then who is misusing the Death Zone?
CASTELLAN: We were hoping you could tell us. You have been there.
5th DOCTOR: Who has control of the Time Scoop?
BORUSA: No one. Well, its use is prohibited.
5th DOCTOR: But the machinery still exists.
BORUSA: Doctor, you seem to be implying that the Time Scoop was used to bring you?
5th DOCTOR: Yes, I am, rather.
FLAVIA: Then you accuse a Time Lord.
5th DOCTOR: I think it would be quite an important one as well.
BORUSA: You have evidence, of course.
5th DOCTOR: No. No, not yet.
BORUSA: Then upon what do you base this outrageous accusation?
5th DOCTOR: Cybermen. Whoever brought me and my other selves here also brought them. Now, you know our legends well enough. Even in our most corrupt period our ancestors never allowed the Cybermen to play the game. Like the Daleks, they play too well.
CASTELLAN: Hardly proof of a traitor.
5th DOCTOR: And then there's this (indicating the recall device). You know, the Death Zone is a large place and yet, the Cybermen found us very quickly - almost as if they were supposed to.
BORUSA: They are highly skilled in such things.
5th DOCTOR: Especially when helped. This is the one thing the Master would be sure to keep on him at all times - the recall device. And within…

(He removes the top of the device.)

5th DOCTOR: ...a homing beacon.

(He tosses it to the Castellan.)

BORUSA: Which you gave him, Castellan.
CASTELLAN: Well, it's a lie. The Doctor wants revenge.
BORUSA: Sit down.

(He presses a button on an intercom.)

CASTELLAN: I will not submit to such wild accusations.
BORUSA: Commander!

(The doors open and the Guard Commander enters.)

COMMANDER: Lord President?
BORUSA: Instigate and immediate and rigorous search of the Castellan's office and living quarters.

(The Commander and guards leave.)

58: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, MISTY MOORLAND

LEADER: I do not believe your lies!

(He points to the Master.)

MASTER: All I have said is the truth. We've all been sent here for the same reason.
LIEUTENANT: To fight?
MASTER: To destroy each other, for the amusement of the Time Lords. But you don't have to play their game. You can defeat them, gain your revenge - but only with my help.
LEADER: Explain.
MASTER: Close by there's a Tower, the fortress of your enemies, the Time Lords. It's well defended, but I can help you break in.
CYBERMAN: And, what do you ask in return?
MASTER: My life. My freedom. A chance to share in your revenge. To destroy the Time Lords.
LEADER: Guard him.
CYBERMAN: Leader.

(The Cyber Leader and the Cyber Lieutenant move away from the Master.)

LEADER: We will allow him to guide us to this Tower.
LIEUTENANT: He is an alien. Aliens are not to be trusted.
LEADER: It is not necessary to trust him.
LIEUTENANT: Will you give him his freedom?
LEADER: Promises to aliens have no validity. When the Tower is in our hands, he will be destroyed.

59: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM:

(Susan and Turlough are watching an indicator on the screen on the console.)

SUSAN: They're moving so slowly.
TURLOUGH: Don't worry. Tegan will look after the old man.
SUSAN: If only we could make contact with the other Doctors.

(They hear a thumping noise coming from outside.)

SUSAN: What's that?

(Turlough switches on the scanner.)

SUSAN: Cybermen.

60: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, CAVES BENEATH THE TOWER

2nd DOCTOR: Come along, Brigadier, come along - this way. We should be at the Tower very soon. The tunnel's rising all the time.
BRIGADIER: Is that supposed to cheer me up?

(They hear a growling noise.)

BRIGADIER: What was that?
2nd DOCTOR: It sounded like something very large and very fierce and probably very hungry. Come on.

61: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, SLATEY HILLS, NEAR A CAVE ENTRANCE

SARAH-JANE: It's a dead end.
3rd DOCTOR: No it's not - look.

(He points to ledge.)

SARAH-JANE: I can't go along there. I get vertigo.
3rd DOCTOR: Well, I'll help you. And anyway, we can't go back.
SARAH-JANE: Why not? We've shaken the Cybermen off.
3rd DOCTOR: They don't get tired, that's why not. And they never give up.
SARAH-JANE: Oh, no, no. I remember. Okay, well let's go then. And if I don't fall off that path, I'll probably die of fright.
3rd DOCTOR: Wait!
SARAH-JANE: Wha...! What is it?

(The 3rd Doctor gestures in the direction of a Raston Warrior robot, standing near the cave entrance.)

3rd DOCTOR: A Raston Warrior robot - the most perfect killing machine ever devised.
SARAH-JANE: It isn't armed.

(The Robot fires a long arrow from its arm.)

3rd DOCTOR: Quick! Over there! Their armourments are built in - and sensors detect movement, any movement.
SARAH-JANE: Anything else I shouldn't know?
3rd DOCTOR: Yes. They move like lightning.

(The Robot jumps and disappears; only to reappear a short distance away. It then repeats this action to end up where it started.)

SARAH-JANE: What's it doing?
3rd DOCTOR: Playing with us.

(Unbeknown to the 3rd Doctor and Sarah, a group of Cybermen approaches. The Robot continues to move 'like lightning' between various points.)

3rd DOCTOR: Freeze, Sarah-Jane. If you move, we're dead.

62: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, MOORLAND

TEGAN: Come on, Doc, you can make it.
1st DOCTOR: Well of course I can, young woman. And kindly refrain from addressing me as 'Doc'.

63: INT: GALLIFREY, A COUNCIL CHAMBER

COMMANDER: (Holding a casket) As you can see, my lord, the casket bears the Seal of Rassilon.

(He places the casket on the table.)

BORUSA: Where was this found?
COMMANDER: In the Castellan's room.

(Borusa opens the casket to reveal some scrolls.)

FLAVIA: The Black Scrolls of Rassilon!
5th DOCTOR: Interesting. I thought they were out of print.

(The 5th Doctor reaches for the scrolls but Borusa stops him.)

BORUSA: No, don't touch, Doctor. This is forbidden knowledge from the Dark Time.

(The Scrolls self-ignite. Borusa closes the casket.)

BORUSA: Are you taking no chances?
CASTELLAN: I am innocent. I have never seen that casket before.
BORUSA: Take him to Security and discover the truth.

(The Guards escort the Castellan towards the door.)

BORUSA: Commander. You are authorized to use the mind probe.
CASTELLAN: What? No, not the mind probe.

(The Castellan is taken out of the room.)

5th DOCTOR: Let me speak to him.
BORUSA: No, Doctor. The mind probe will give us all the answers we require.

(There is a shot from outside the room. Borusa and the 5th Doctor open the doors to the corridor, where they find the Castellan lying dead on the floor. A stazer is lying near one of his hands.)

DOCTOR: Was that really necessary?
COMMANDER: Well, as you can see, he was armed and trying to escape.
5th DOCTOR: It seems you have been saved the embarrassment of a trial.
BORUSA: And you have found your traitor, Doctor. Let us at least hope that it will simplify the task of your other selves.
5th DOCTOR: Yes, yes, I...I should be getting back to them.
BORUSA: Doctor, I admire your courage, but I cannot allow you to return. It will take some time to establish the Castellan's role in this affair. I...need your help and advice.
5th DOCTOR: I can't abandon them.
BORUSA: I'm sure your other selves will be able to cope.
5th DOCTOR: Are they all in the Zone?
BORUSA: Yes, all but one. And he is trapped in the Vortex. Doctor, I am sorry, but I must insist that you remain. Chancellor Flavia, would you escort the Doctor to a place of rest? I'm sure he must be exhausted.

(Flavia leads the 5th Doctor out of the chamber.)

64: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, CAVES BENEATH THE TOWER

(The 2nd Doctor and the Brigadier are running away from the growling sound.)

BRIGADIER: Whatever that creature is, it's got our scent - it's hunting us!
2nd DOCTOR: Oh! In here. Oh, oh!

(They squeeze through a gap in the cave wall.)

BRIGADIER: Doctor, look!

(The Yeti attempts to reach through the gap. The 2nd Doctor tries to fend it off with the flame of his torch.)

BRIGADIER: Trapped!
2nd DOCTOR: (whispered) Hold this.

(The Brigadier takes the torch as the 2nd Doctor rummages through his pockets.)

BRIGADIER: Hurry up, Doctor, it's trying to dig us out!
2nd DOCTOR: Ah!

(He produces what looks like a stick of dynamite and lights the fuse with the torch, before throwing it at the Yeti.)

BRIGADIER: What was that?
2nd DOCTOR: Pardon?
BRIGADIER: What was that?!
2nd DOCTOR: It's a Galactic Missile.

(The Missile explodes, but the Yeti is undeterred.)

2nd DOCTOR: It's a Yeti!
BRIGADIER: Where did it come from?
2nd DOCTOR: It must have been left over from the Games.
BRIGADIER: You maddened it!

(The Yeti brings down the rocks around the gap in the cave wall.)

2nd DOCTOR: Well, at least it can't get at us.
BRIGADIER: Yes - and now we're trapped. Buried alive.
2nd DOCTOR: Yes, I'm afraid we are.

(The 2nd Doctor notices that the torch flame is flickering.)

2nd DOCTOR: On the other hand, where there's a wind, there's a way.

(They follow the passage behind them until they reach a door.)

2nd DOCTOR: Well, I think we've arrived.

(He pushes open the door.)

2nd DOCTOR: I don't like this at all. Someone - or something - wants us to go inside. After you, Brigadier.
BRIGADIER: No, no - after you, Doctor.
2nd DOCTOR: Mmm...

65: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

SUSAN: At least that terrible hammering's stopped.
TURLOUGH: That's what's worrying me.
SUSAN: Look!

(On the scanner screen, Cybermen can be seen.)

SUSAN: What's that they're carrying?
TURLOUGH: I don't know. But I would think their intention is to try and break in.

66: EXT: DEATH ZONE, NEAR A CAVE ENTRANCE

SARAH-JANE: Doctor, I don't think I can take much more of this.

(The 3rd Doctor spots the approaching Cybermen.)

3rd DOCTOR: Hang on, Sarah-Jane, hang on. I think we've got one hope.

(As the 3rd Doctor and Sarah-Jane take cover, the Robot systematically destroys all of the Cybermen. This keeps the Robot distracted long enough for the 3rd Doctor and Sarah-Jane to attempt to run for the cave entrance.)

3rd DOCTOR: Right, now.

(They run for the cave.)

3rd DOCTOR: Luck's with us, Sarah-Jane. The Robot's extra arrows - at least now we'll have something to have a fight with. Wait a minute - these might come in handy.

(He grabs some ropes. The Robot knocks the head off the last remaining Cyberman.)

67: INT: GALLIFREY, SMALL GARDEN CORRIDOR

(Flavia and the 5th Doctor are strolling down the corridor.)

FLAVIA: You look so worried, Doctor. Your friends and your other selves will be safe, I am sure.
5th DOCTOR: At the moment I'm more concerned for the High Council - for Gallifrey.
FLAVIA: The traitor has been found.
5th DOCTOR: Has he? You know, I've known the Castellan too long. Oh, he was limited, a little narrow, but always fiercely loyal to his oath of office. Any mention of the Dark days filled him with horror. Now, you saw his reaction to the Black Scrolls - it wasn't that of a man discovered, but of sheer disbelief. No, I'm convinced the traitor is still at large.
FLAVIA: I will speak to the Commander who killed the Castellan. There may be much to be learned from him.
5th DOCTOR: Thank you. And I must speak to the Lord President.

(The 5th Doctor runs back the way they came.)

68: EXT: THE DEATH ZONE, A MOUNTAIN OVERLOOKING THE TOWER

(Sarah-Jane walks to the edge of the cliff.)

SARAH-JANE: Now what do we do? Fly?
3rd DOCTOR: What a splendid idea.

69: INT: DEATH ZONE, THE TOWER, MAIN ENTRANCE

TEGAN: Now what? You're not suggesting we bang down the door, I hope.

(The 1st Doctor is looking at a bell-shaped device in front of them.)

1st DOCTOR:  It looks very much like a bell to me.

(He opens it and presses some buttons; the door opens.)

TEGAN: It's an entry coder!

70: EXT: DEATH ZONE, A MOUNTAIN OVERLOOKING THE TOWER

3rd DOCTOR: Right, that should do it.
SARAH-JANE: You're crazy - that'll never work.
3rd DOCTOR: Well, maybe not. But can you think of a better suggestion? No? All right, then - stand well back.

(He throws the rope, tied into a lasso, and hooks it onto the Tower. The Master is observing all of this from slightly further down the mountain.)

MASTER: Ever resourceful, Doctor.

(The 3rd Doctor slides along the rope to the Tower. As Sarah-Jane follows, a Cyberman reaches the point where the rope is fixed to the mountain, but collapses before it can do anything.)

71: INT: THE TOP OF THE TOWER

(The 3rd Doctor struggles to help Sarah-Jane onto the Tower.)

3rd DOCTOR: I've got you! Now, find a foot hole - find any foot hole.
SARAH-JANE: Yes, yes!
3rd DOCTOR: Have you got one?
SARAH-JANE: Yes!
3rd DOCTOR: Right. Now, let go with this hand...
SARAH-JANE: Let go?!
3rd DOCTOR: Hold both hold loops in one hand. Both loops in one hand. Right, come on. That's it - find another foot hole. I've got you. Put it on that ledge - can you find that ledge?
SARAH-JANE: Yes, yes.
3rd DOCTOR: Good, now up you come, up you come.

(Sarah-Jane looks down and screams.)

3rd DOCTOR: Don't look down!
SARAH-JANE: (gabbles something incomprehensible)
3rd DOCTOR: Come on. Up. That's it. Come on
SARAH-JANE: I did it!
3rd DOCTOR: There you go.
SARAH-JANE: I did it!
3rd DOCTOR: That's it. Well now, enjoy the flight?
SARAH-JANE: (getting her breath back) Oh...great! Well, we're here. How do you reckon we get in?

(He opens a door.)

3rd DOCTOR: Through here, would you believe?

72: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(On the scanner screen the Cybermen can be seen preparing something.)

SUSAN: It's a bomb.
TURLOUGH: Big, isn't it?

(They both look worriedly at each other.)

73: INT: THE DARK TOWER, A ROOM WITH A 'CHESSBOARD' FLOOR

(The 1st Doctor stops Tegan, as she is about to walk a part of the floor that looks like a chessboard.)

1st DOCTOR: Don't be in such a hurry.

(He produces some coins from his pocket.)

TEGAN: We have to pay to get in?
1st DOCTOR: It could cost you your life.

(He throws coins at the first four rows of squares. Nothing happens.)

TEGAN: How long do you plan to play pitch and toss?
1st DOCTOR: Patience, child.

(He throws a coin at the fifth row and several laser beams descend on the board from above.)

1st DOCTOR: Diabolical ingenuity! Nothing happens until you reach the fifth row - half way, and then he entire board becomes a death trap.
MASTER: Our ancestors had such a wonderful sense of humour.

(The Master enters the room through the same door that Tegan and the 1st Doctor did.)

1st DOCTOR: Do I know you, young man?
MASTER: Believe it or not, we were at the academy together.
TEGAN: What do you want?
MASTER: To help.
TEGAN: That's the funniest thing I've heard all day.
MASTER: Believe what you like, I should advise you to hide. I have some very suspicious allies close behind me.
TEGAN: Allies?

(The Cybermen approach.)

TEGAN: Come on!

(Tegan and the 1st Doctor quickly hide out of sight.)

MASTER: Enter, but be careful.

(The Cybermen enter the room and fill the space near the chessboard.)

MASTER: The fortress of the Time Lords is at your mercy.
LIEUTENANT: Why was the main gate left unguarded?
MASTER: Oh, the Time Lords believed that no one could survive the Death Zone. It's that sort of woolly thinking that'll bring about their destruction.

(He gestures to the Cybermen to proceed, but they seem hesitant.)

MASTER: Do you fear an empty room? Shall I lead the way?

(The Cyber leader nods. The Master walks half way across the board.)

LEADER: You will cross to the far side.
MASTER: Very well.

(He does so.)

MASTER: You see?

(He leaps back to the Cybermen and gestures for them to cross.)

LEADER: Take the patrol across.

(The Cybermen begin to cross the board. As they reach the halfway mark, the laser beams once more hit the board, destroying all of the Cybermen - except the Leader, who did not cross. The Master goes to retrieve a gun from one of the dead Cybermen.)

LEADER: You have betrayed us. Why?
MASTER: Betrayed? No. Oh, I...I...might have misled you a little, but the...the safe path across the board changes with every journey.
LEADER: You will show me the safe route, or I shall destroy you.

(The Master obliges, but before the Leader can get very far, the Master turns and fires the Cyber-gun. The Leader falls to the ground as his circuits explode. The Master laughs as the 1st Doctor and Tegan emerge from their hiding place.)

TEGAN: Wasn't that a little ruthless - even for you?
MASTER: In one of the many wars on your miserable little planet, they used to drive sheep across minefields. The principle is the same.
TEGAN: Not quite. This minefield is still just as dangerous.
MASTER: Do you think so?

(He leaps to the other side of the board.)

MASTER: Try it, Doctor, it's as easy as pi!

(He leaves by a door at the far end of the room.)

1st DOCTOR: What an extraordinary fellow. As easy as pie? As easy as pie?
TEGAN: That's what he said.
1st DOCTOR: No he didn't! He said 'easy as pi' - the Greek letter pi. Surely you know some basic mathematics, child?
TEGAN: Of course. The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is represented by the Greek letter pi, right?
1st DOCTOR: Exactly. You find the safe path by using the mathematical formula pi. Oh, but the application, the application. Now, let me see, now: three point one four one five nine...two six five. Yes, that's it! You stay there, child.

(He crosses safely to the other side of the board.)

1st DOCTOR: Now!

(He gestures with his stick.)

TEGAN: I hope you've got your sums right.

74: INT: GALLIFREY, A COUNCIL CHAMBER

(The 5th Doctor is let into the chamber by a guard, but finds it empty.)

5th DOCTOR: I thought you said the Lord President was in here.
GUARD: He is.

(He enters the room.)

GUARD: Or at least, he was.
5th DOCTOR: You're sure about that, are you?
GUARD: Positive. There isn't any way he could have left without my seeing him.

(The Doctor examining the transmat device.)

5th DOCTOR: No power. He couldn't have left that way. Inform Chancellor Flavia that the Lord President has disappeared, would you?
GUARD: Sir.

(The guard leaves. The 5th Doctor begins searching the room for signs of a hidden room.)

75: INT: DARK TOWER, A STAIRCASE

(Sarah-Jane and the 3rd Doctor are descending a staircase. Sarah-Jane stops near the bottom.)

SARAH-JANE: I can't go on. I feel as if something were pushing me back.
3rd DOCTOR: Yes. Yes, I can feel it too, Sarah. It's the mind of Rassilon. We must be nearing the tomb. But you've got to fight it. You must keep your mind under control.
SARAH-JANE: I can't. I feel as if something absolutely terrible were going to happen.
3rd DOCTOR: It's all right, Sarah. Sit down here. Sit down and rest for a moment, all right?

(Sarah-Jane sits and the 3rd Doctor starts to leave. She catches hold of his hand to stop him.)

SARAH-JANE: Where are you going?
3rd DOCTOR: I won't be a second.

(He leaves.)

SARAH-JANE: Well, don't be too long.

76: INT: DARK TOWER, A CORRIDOR

(The 3rd Doctor reaches a corner and, after looking around it, starts to walk back. From around the corner steps Captain Mike Yates.)

YATES: Doctor? Doctor, this way.
3rd DOCTOR: Mike? Mike Yates? How did you get here?
YATES: Same way as you. Liz Shaw is here, too.

(She enters)

3rd DOCTOR: Good heavens. Hello Liz. Any more of you?
LIZ: Someone you should know very well. Come and see for yourself.
3rd DOCTOR: Ah, not that little fellow in the checked trousers and the black frock coat?
LIZ: And more - there are five of you now.
3rd DOCTOR: Oh, good grief.
YATES: And they're waiting for you.
3rd DOCTOR: Yes, well, you wait here for a moment - I'll go and get Sarah.
YATES: I'll fetch her.
3rd DOCTOR: No, I, er... I think I'll go, Mike. She's nervous enough as it is.
LIZ: Let Mike go. Your other selves need you urgently.
3rd DOCTOR: No, I think I'll go thanks.

(Mike tries to stop him, but he gets past.)

YATES: No, Doctor!
LIZ: Stop him!
3rd DOCTOR: How? You're phantoms - illusions of the mind!
LIZ: Sto-o-o-o-o-p hi-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-m!!!

(As she says this, Liz and Yates disappear.)

77: INT: DARK TOWER, A STAIRCASE

SARAH-JANE: What's happening? Doctor? Doctor!

(She jumps up and runs into the 3rd Doctor as he returns.)

SARAH-JANE: Oh, there you are.
3rd DOCTOR: Sarah?
SARAH-JANE: Sarah? Of course I am. What are you talking about? Listen - why did you leave me for so long? And what was that scream?
3rd DOCTOR: They were, just phantoms from the past.
SARAH-JANE: Yes, well, I'm in the present and I'm real.
3rd DOCTOR: Yes. Yeah, you're real enough. Come on.

(They head down the corridor in the opposite direction from which the 3rd Doctor saw Liz and Yates.)

78: INT: DARK TOWER, ANOTHER CORRIDOR

(The 1st Doctor and Tegan walk around a corner.)

TEGAN: Do you feel weird, Doctor?

(They stop near a staircase.)

1st DOCTOR: Full of strange fears and mysterious forebodings?
TEGAN: That's it.
1st DOCTOR: No, as a matter of fact, I don't. It's all illusion, child. We're close to the domain of Rassilon, whose mind is reaching out to attack us. Just ignore it as I do.
TEGAN: How?
1st DOCTOR: Fear itself is largely an illusion. And at my age, there's little left to fear. Hum. No, there's nothing here to harm us.

(As they walk off, the Master descends the staircase behind them.)

79: INT: DARK TOWER, ANOTHER CORRIDOR

2nd DOCTOR: Take this.

(He hands the Brigadier the torch. There is a loud, shrill scream.)

BRIGADIER: What was that?
2nd DOCTOR: We'll go and see.

(He gestures for the Brigadier to hang up the torch on the wall nearby. The Brigadier does so. Walking round a corner, they find Zoe and Jamie standing on a staircase.)

BRIGADIER: Good grief!
2nd DOCTOR: Jamie! Zoe!
JAMIE: Stay back, Doctor!
2nd DOCTOR: Why, what's happening?
ZOE: Don't come any closer. There's a force field.
2nd DOCTOR: A force field? We'll soon see about that.

(He begins rummaging through his pockets.)

JAMIE: No, don't, Doctor. I...if the force field is disturbed it'll destroy us.
ZOE: You must go back!
BRIGADIER: Well, Doctor, what are we going to do?!
2nd DOCTOR: Get them out of it.
JAMIE: No, no, please don't, Doctor.
ZOE: Oh, go back. Save yourselves.

(The 2nd Doctor stops going through his pockets.)

2nd DOCTOR: I can't. I can't leave you there.
ZOE: You must.
BRIGADIER: We could find another way into the tomb area.
2nd DOCTOR: But Zoe and Jamie would still be trapped.
JAMIE: The Brigadier's right.
2nd DOCTOR: Or would they? Just a minute - it's a matter of memory.

(He steps closer to Jamie and Zoe.)

ZOE: Stay away!
2nd DOCTOR: Why? I can't harm you.
JAMIE: One step nearer and we're dead!
2nd DOCTOR: You can't kill illusions.

(He steps closer. Nothing happens.)

JAMIE: No! Brigadier...!
2nd DOCTOR: You're not real. When you were returned to your own people, the Time Lords erased your memory of the period you spent with me. So, how do you know who we are? Answer!

(Zoe and Jamie scream and disappear.)

BRIGADIER: They're gone.
2nd DOCTOR: Yes, yes, it's...very sad.

(They begin climbing the staircase.)

BRIGADIER: I still don't like it, Doctor. I don't fully understand why we're here.
2nd DOCTOR: You want to get home?
BRIGADIER: Of course.
2nd DOCTOR: That is why we are here. Have faith, Brigadier. Have I ever led you astray?
BRIGADIER: On many occasions.
2nd DOCTOR: Yes, well...this will be the exception. Come along.

80: INT: GALLIFREY, COUNCIL CHAMBER

(The 5th Doctor goes to examine a portrait on the wall. He then spots a harp.)

5th DOCTOR: The Harp of Rassilon. I never knew he was musical. Borusa either, for that matter.

(He plucks a string and the sound of the note causes the wall behind him to make a noise also.)

5th DOCTOR: Interesting. A musical key.

(He plays more notes.)

5th DOCTOR: A combination of notes. A tune.

(He plucks two more of the harp's strings.)

81: INT: DARK TOWER, THE TOMB OF RASSILON

(The 1st Doctor and Tegan enter the Tomb area. Tegan walks toward the body of Rassilon as the 1st Doctor walks over to an obelisk pedestal shaped object. He is reading an inscription as the 3rd Doctor and Sarah-Jane walk in.)

1st DOCTOR: Ah, there you are at last, dear fellow. What kept you?
3rd DOCTOR: What kept me? Of all the confounded arrogance.
1st DOCTOR: Never mind, never mind - you can tell me later. Come and take a look at this.
3rd DOCTOR: What is it?

(The 3rd Doctor walks over to the 1st Doctor and Sarah-Jane walks over to Tegan.)

TEGAN: (To Sarah) Tegan.
SARAH-JANE: Sarah.

(They shake hands.)

3rd DOCTOR: Hmm, fascinating.
1st DOCTOR: What happened to the little fellow?

(The 2nd Doctor and the Brigadier walk in.)

2nd DOCTOR: The little fellow is perfectly all right, thank you very much.

(He throws his coat on a table near the entrance.)

2nd DOCTOR: Ah-hum. Ah. Of course I'm here! You don't imagine anything you two could do could stop me, do you?

(He walks up to the 1st and 3rd Doctors.)

2nd DOCTOR: Let's have a look, what's this?

(The Brigadier lays his coat next to the 2nd Doctor's.)

TEGAN and SARAH-JANE: (Together) Brigadier?

(He turns to Sarah-Jane and Tegan.)

BRIGADIER: Good heavens. It's Miss Smith, isn't it? And Miss Jovanka.

(He shakes both of their hands. The 3rd Doctor looks up from the inscription.)

3rd DOCTOR: Lethbridge Stewart? Oh, my dear fellow - how very nice to see you again.

(He walks over to the Brigadier and shakes his hand.)

BRIGADIER: Great heavens, you as well. Though I can't exactly say it's nice to be here. Do you know, I was enjoying...
3rd DOCTOR: You'll have to excuse me, old chap. We've got a very important inscription to translate and I think they'll get it all wrong without me.

(He walks back to the 1st and 2nd Doctors.)

BRIGADIER: Typical. Absolutely typical.
SARAH-JANE: Oh, I know, I know. Drag you through time and space without so much as a bye or leave, then leave you out when things get interesting.

(Apparently the Doctors are done translating the inscription.)

2nd DOCTOR: So, that's what it's all about. I never dreamed...
1st DOCTOR: It changes nothing - absolutely nothing. We lower the force field, get the young fellow back from Gallifrey and all go home. This doesn't concern us - it mustn't.
TEGAN: What does the inscription say?
BRIGADIER: Yes, I'd quite like to know as well.
SARAH-JANE: Yes, we've all been through a great deal to get here.
1st DOCTOR: (Points to the 2nd Doctor) You - tell them.
2nd DOCTOR: It's Old High Gallifreyan, the ancient language of the Time Lords. Not many people understand it these days...
1st, 2nd, 3rd DOCTORS:
(Together) Fortunately, I do.
BRIGADIER: Yes, all very interesting, I'm sure, Doctors, but what does it say?
3rd DOCTOR: That this is the Tomb of Rassilon, where Rassilon lies in eternal sleep.
2nd DOCTOR: It also says that anyone who has got this far has passed many dangers and shown great courage and determination.

(He points to the inscription.)

2nd DOCTOR: What does this bit mean?
3rd DOCTOR: To lose is to win and he who wins shall lose.
2nd DOCTOR: I know what it says - what does it mean?
1st DOCTOR: It also promises that whoever takes the ring from Rassilon's hand and puts it on shall get the reward he seeks.
SARAH-JANE: What reward?
1st DOCTOR: Immortality.
BRIGADIER: What, live forever, never die?
1st DOCTOR: That is what the word means, young man.
SARAH-JANE: But that's impossible.
3rd DOCTOR: Apparently not.
2nd DOCTOR: It seems Rassilon possesses it now and is willing to share it with whoever takes the ring.

(The Master walks in.)

MASTER: Thank you, gentlemen, that is exactly what I needed to know! I came here to help you - a little unwillingly, but I came. My services were scorned, my help refused. Now I shall help myself - to immortality.
1st DOCTOR: Out of the question.
3rd DOCTOR: You're hardly a suitable candidate.
2nd DOCTOR: For anything.

(The Master laughs and pulls out his tissue compression eliminator, pointing it at the Doctors.)

MASTER: The decision is scarcely yours. Killing you once was never enough for me, Doctor. How...how gratifying to do it three times over!
BRIGADIER: Nice to see you again.

(With a swift punch, the Brigadier knocks the Master out.)

82: EXT: DEATH ZONE, NEAR THE TARDIS

(A short distance from the TARDIS, a Cyber Leader and another Cyberman overlook events.)

CYBERMAN: Leader, the bombs are ready.
LEADER: Excellent. Prepare for detonation.

83: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

TURLOUGH: You realize what they're up to?
SUSAN: What are we going to do we do now?
TURLOUGH: Die.

84: INT: GALLIFREY, COUNCIL CHAMBER

(The Doctor is still playing the harp.)

5th DOCTOR: Well, if it is a tune, what could it be? A tune like...a tune like...

(He glances at the portrait on the wall and back at the harp. He then does a double take on the portrait.)

5th DOCTOR: A tune like the one that's been under my nose all the time, perhaps.

(He plays the tune written on the portrait and a section of the wall slides away to reveal a hidden room. He walks into the room.)

85: INT: GALLIFREY, A HIDDEN ROOM

(The 5th Doctor examines the board containing models of himself and his companions. Borusa turns around from the control panel.)

BORUSA: Welcome, Doctor.
5th DOCTOR: Lord President.
BORUSA: You show very little surprise. Can it be that you suspected me?
5th DOCTOR: Not at first. Your little charade fooled me for a while.
BORUSA: Yes, it was rather neat, wasn't it? Such a pity about the Castellan, but then, I needed someone to use for a diversion.
5th DOCTOR: Oh, Borusa. What's happened to you?
BORUSA: You know how long I have ruled Gallifrey, Doctor - both openly, or behind the scenes.
5th DOCTOR: Well, you'd done great service - it was only right you should become President.
BORUSA: President? How long before I must retire - my work half done? If I could continue.
5th DOCTOR: Oh, I understand. You want to be President throughout all your remaining regenerations.
BORUSA: You underestimate my ambition, Doctor. I shall be President eternal - and rule forever.
5th DOCTOR: Immortality? Well, that's impossible - even for a Time Lord.
BORUSA: Rassilon achieved it. Timeless, perpetual, bodily regeneration. True immortality!

86: INT: DARK TOWER, THE TOMB

(The 3rd Doctor presses some buttons on a control bank.)

3rd DOCTOR: Well, I've reversed the polarity of the neutron flow, so the TARDIS should be free of the force field now.
2nd DOCTOR: I'll try to get through to the capitol.

(He punches some buttons on another control panel.)

87: EXT: DEATH ZONE, NEAR THE TARDIS

CYBERMAN: All is prepared.
LEADER: Excellent.

(The TARDIS begins to dematerialize.)

LEADER: Detonate!

(The bomb explodes. When the smoke clears, the TARDIS is nowhere to be seen.)

88: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

(Susan and Turlough run to the console.)

SUSAN: They made it! They made it!
TURLOUGH: Are we going to the Tower?
SUSAN: We must be, we're on preset co-ordinates.

89: INT: GALLIFREY, HIDDEN ROOM

BORUSA: Immortal, Doctor. Before Rassilon was bound, he left clues for his successor, who he knew would follow him. I have discovered much, Doctor. This game, control room, the casket, the scrolls, the coronet of Rassilon.
5th DOCTOR: But not the final secret.
BORUSA: The secret of immortality, Doctor? It lies in the Dark Tower, in the Tomb of Rassilon itself. But there are many dangers - many traps.
5th DOCTOR: So, you sent me to the Zone to deal with them for you.
BORUSA: I gave you companions to help. An old enemy to fight. It's a game within a game.
5th DOCTOR: And you botched it, didn't you? One of my selves is trapped in a time vortex, endangering my very existence.
BORUSA: Oh, you have no fear, Doctor. Your temporal stability will be maintained. I need you to serve me.
5th DOCTOR: Oh, I will not serve you.
BORUSA: You have no choice, Doctor - I wear the coronet of Rassilon.
5th DOCTOR: And very fetching it is, too.
BORUSA: It emphasizes my will and allows me to control the minds of others. Bow down before me, Doctor.

(The 5th Doctor tries to resist, but eventually does as Borusa demands.)

BORUSA: Come, Doctor.

(The 5th Doctor rises and they walk out of the control room.)

90: INT: DARK TOWER, THE TOMB

(The TARDIS materializes in a corner. Susan and Turlough exit the TARDIS and walk over to the Doctors.)

2nd DOCTOR: (Talking into a screen) Can you hear me? Can you hear me, Doctor? Calling the Capitol, calling the capitol - can you hear me, old fellow?

91: INT: GALLIFREY, COUNCIL CHAMBER

(The 2nd Doctor's face appears on the communications screen as Borusa and the 5th Doctor enter the chamber.)

2nd DOCTOR: (On the screen) Calling the Capitol, calling the Capitol. This is the Doctor speaking - well, one of them. Can you hear me? Can you hear me, Doctor? Is there anybody there? Calling the Capitol.

(The 5th Doctor walks to the screen and flips a switch.)

5th DOCTOR: Yes, I'm here.
2nd DOCTOR: (On the screen) Ah, there I am, I mean, there you are.

92: INT: DARK TOWER, THE TOMB

2nd DOCTOR: (Talking into the screen) We've reached the Tower, we're all safe, the barriers are down and the TARDIS is here. And I say - we've made the most extraordinary discovery.
5th DOCTOR: (On the screen) I know what you have discovered. Do not transmit further. Stay where you are and touch nothing. President Borusa is arriving to take full charge.

(The screen goes blank.)

2nd DOCTOR: Touch nothing, indeed? Who does he think he is?

(The Doctors walk away from the control panels.)

1st DOCTOR: He didn't want us to mention the Ring of Rassilon. Natural enough.
3rd DOCTOR: Something's wrong, you know.
2nd DOCTOR: (Laughing) You haven't changed. Still finding menace in your own shadow.
1st DOCTOR: I feel the same.
2nd DOCTOR: Oh. Well, we shall soon see, won't we.

(The 5th Doctor and Borusa arrive via a transmat point at the far end of the chamber. They begin to walk toward the other Doctors but are stopped by Tegan.)

TEGAN: Doctor, are you all right?
BORUSA: Be silent.

(Everyone in the room except for the Doctors and Borusa appears to freeze.)

BORUSA: Be silent, all of you. Do not move or speak until I give you leave.

(Borusa and the 5th Doctor continue over to the other Doctors.)

BORUSA: Gentlemen, I owe you my thanks. You have served the purpose for which I brought you here.
3rd DOCTOR: You brought us here?
2nd DOCTOR: He's after the Ring of Rassilon - he wants immortality.
3rd DOCTOR: And you were the one who didn't sense anything was wrong.
1st DOCTOR: He's a renegade; no better than that villain down there.

(He indicates the Master, who is laying tied up on the floor.)

2nd DOCTOR: We can't allow it, you know.
3rd DOCTOR: The Tomb was sealed for the best of reasons.
1st DOCTOR: And as soon as we're back to our own time streams, it must be sealed again - permanently!

(The first, second and 3rd Doctors advance on Borusa, but he holds up his staff and they fall back.)

2nd DOCTOR: Doctor, we need you. Join us.
1st DOCTOR: He can't. Some kind of mind lock. Fight it, my boy. Fight it. Concentrate. We must be one.

(As the other Doctors concentrate, the 5th Doctor walks over to them, then turns to face Borusa. Borusa eventually drops his staff.)

5th DOCTOR: You see, Borusa? Together, we're a match for you.
BORUSA: Perhaps, but you will never overcome me.
5th DOCTOR: We don't need to. Soon, Chancellor Flavia will be here with her guards - or can you overcome the whole high council?
BORUSA: Why not? I am Lord President of Gallifrey and you are the notorious renegades. We shall see who is believed.
RASSILON: (oov) This is the Game of Rassilon.

(Borusa walks over to the body of Rassilon. The 5th Doctor starts to follow, but is stopped by the 1st Doctor.)

1st DOCTOR: No, wait, my boy. That was the voice of Rassilon. It's out of our hands now.
BORUSA: I am Borusa - Lord President of Gallifrey.

(An image of the head of Rassilon appears, shimmering, above the dead body of the former President.)

RASSILON: Why have you come here?
BORUSA: I come to claim that which is promised.
RASSILON: You seek immortality?
BORUSA: I do.
RASSILON: Be sure, be very sure. Even now, it is not too late to turn back.
BORUSA: I am sure.

(Rassilon looks over at the Doctors.)

RASSILON: And these others?
BORUSA: These are my servants.
RASSILON: (Speaking to the Doctors) Is this so?
3rd DOCTOR: It most certainly is not.
2nd DOCTOR: Don't believe him.
5th DOCTOR: It's nonsense.
1st DOCTOR: Don't listen to them, Lord Rassilon. President Borusa speaks the truth.
RASSILON: You believe that Borusa deserves the immortality he seeks?
1st DOCTOR: Indeed I do.
RASSILON: He shall have it. (To Borusa) Take the Ring.

(Borusa takes the ring from the finger of Rassilon's body.)

RASSILON: You claim immortality, Lord Borusa. You will not turn back?
BORUSA: Never!
RASSILON: Then put on the Ring.

(Borusa does so.)

RASSILON: Others have come to claim immortality through the ages. It was given to them, as it shall be given to you. Your place is prepared, Lord President Borusa.
BORUSA: No! No!

(As the Ring disappears from Borusa's finger and reappears on that of the body of Rassilon, Borusa himself disappears, his head then appearing as a statue on the side of Rassilon's tomb. The Brigadier, Sarah, Tegan, Susan and Turlough suddenly start moving again.)

RASSILON: And what of you, Doctors? Do you claim immortality, too?
ALL DOCTORS: No, no, no thank you!
5th DOCTOR: No, my Lord. All we ask is that we be returned to our proper place in time and space.
RASSILON: It shall be done.
5th DOCTOR: One of us is trapped.
RASSILON: I know. He, too, shall be freed.

93: EXT: CAMBRIDGE, AN ALLEYWAY

[This scene is taken from the beginning of 'Shada', episode three]

(The 4th Doctor is lying on the ground, under a gate, looking triumphant. Romana stands in the doorway of the TARDIS.)

ROMANA: Doctor!
4th DOCTOR: Yes?
ROMANA: Ssh! Hurry!
4th DOCTOR: Coming!

(The 4th Doctor enters the TARDIS and it dematerializes.)

94: INT: DARK TOWER, THE TOMB

RASSILON: So shall the one who is bound. His sins will find their punishment in due time.

(The Master disappears.)

RASSILON: It is time for your other selves to depart. Let them make their farewells and go. You have chosen wisely, Doctor. Farewell.
1st DOCTOR: Hahaha
5th DOCTOR: Did you know that would happen?
1st DOCTOR: Hmm? Oh, I'm so sorry - I suddenly realized what the old proverb meant. 'To lose is to win - and he who wins shall lose'. It was all part of Rassilon's trap to find out who wanted immortality and put him out of the way. He knew very well that immortality was a curse, not a blessing.
5th DOCTOR: Well. Now it seems we must part, just as I was getting to know me.
2nd DOCTOR: (To the 5th Doctor) So, you're the latest model, hmm?
5th DOCTOR: Yes - and the most agreeable.
2nd DOCTOR: Certainly the most impudent.
3rd DOCTOR: (To the 2nd Doctor) And our dress sense hasn't improved much, has it?
1st DOCTOR: (To the 2nd & 3rd Doctors) Neither our manners. (To the 5th Doctor) Well, goodbye, my boy.

(He shakes the 5th Doctor's hand.)

1st DOCTOR: You did quite well - quite well. Reassuring to know that my future is in safe hands. Come along, Susan.

(He walks to Susan.)

SUSAN: Goodbye, everybody.
2nd, 3rd, 5th DOCTORS and TEGAN: Goodbye.

(The 1st Doctor and Susan enter the TARDIS.)

2nd DOCTOR: Ah-hum. Time to go, Brigadier.

(The Brigadier picks up and puts on his coat.)

2nd DOCTOR: Well...

(He shakes the 5th Doctor's hand.)

2nd DOCTOR: ...goodbye.
5th DOCTOR: Goodbye.
2nd DOCTOR: (To the 3rd Doctor) Goodbye - fancy pants.
3rd DOCTOR: Scarecrow.

(The 2nd Doctor walks toward the TARDIS.)

BRIGADIER: Doctor! Don't you want your coat?
2nd DOCTOR: Bring it along, would you, Brigadier?

(He enters the TARDIS.)

BRIGADIER: Certainly.

(He picks up the 2nd Doctors coat.)

BRIGADIER: Goodbye, Doctor.
5th DOCTOR: Goodbye.
BRIGADIER: Doctors.
3rd DOCTOR: Brigadier.
BRIGADIER: Splendid fellows - all of you.

(He enters the TARDIS.)

3rd DOCTOR: Well, goodbye, my dear chap.

(He shakes the 5th Doctor's hand.)

3rd DOCTOR: I must say, I've had the time of my lives, haven't we, Sarah-Jane?
SARAH-JANE: Have we? Well, I only have one life - and I think I've had too much already. (To the 5th Doctor) Goodbye - er, yes, it was really nice meeting you.
3rd DOCTOR: Thank you, Sarah-Jane, it was nice meeting you, too.
SARAH-JANE: What?
3rd DOCTOR: I'll explain later.
SARAH-JANE: Oh. Bye.

(The 3rd Doctor and Sarah-Jane enter the TARDIS.)

5th DOCTOR: I'm definitely not the man I was - thank goodness.

(Tegan walks over to the 5th Doctor.)

TEGAN: Are we all going home together?
5th DOCTOR: Watch.

(The TARDIS appears to form three other TARDISes, which fly off in separate directions. Chancellor Flavia, together with some guards, appears in the transmat area. The 5th Doctor meets Chancellor Flavia by Rassilon's body. The Guards line up in front of it.)

FLAVIA: You are safe, Doctor. I feared President Borusa had...where is President Borusa?
5th DOCTOR: Unavailable. It seemed the legend about Rassilon is true.
FLAVIA: You must make a full statement to the High Council.
DOCTOR: Oh, must I?
FLAVIA: It can form part of your inaugural address.
5th DOCTOR: My what?!

(Chancellor Flavia takes the 5th Doctor in arm and they begin walking in the direction of the TARDIS.)

FLAVIA: Doctor, you have evaded your responsibilities for far to long. The disqualification of President Borusa leaves a gap at the very summit of the Time Lord hierarchy. There is only one who can take his place. Yet again, it is my duty and my pleasure to inform you that the full council has exercised its emergency powers to appoint you to the position of President, to take office immediately.
5th DOCTOR: Very well, Chancellor Flavia. You will return to Gallifrey immediately and summon the High Council. You have full deputy power until I return - I shall travel in my TARDIS.
FLAVIA: Oh, but Doctor...
5th DOCTOR: You will address me by my proper title - I am President, am I not? You will obey my commands. (To Tegan and Turlough) Into the TARDIS. (To the guards) You will escort Chancellor Flavia back to her duties.

(The 5th Doctor hurriedly follows Tegan and Turlough into the TARDIS.)

FLAVIA: Doctor, wait!

95: INT: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

5th DOCTOR: Hold tight.

(The 5th Doctor hurriedly operates controls and the central column begins to rise. He then goes to leave the room by the interior door.)

TEGAN: It'll soon be goodbye, then.

(He walks back to Tegan.)

5th DOCTOR: Will it?
TURLOUGH: Well, you're off to Gallifrey to be President. I suppose your Time Lord subjects will find a TARDIS that really works and get us both home?
5th DOCTOR: Who said anything about Gallifrey?
TURLOUGH: You told Chancellor Flavia...
5th DOCTOR: I told her she had full deputy powers until I returned.
TEGAN: You're not going back?
5th DOCTOR: You know, sometimes, Tegan, you take my breath away!
TURLOUGH: Won't the Time Lords be very angry?
5th DOCTOR: Furious!
TEGAN: You mean you're deliberately choosing to go on the run from your own people in a rackety old TARDIS?
5th DOCTOR: Why not? After all, that's how it all started.
